I spent quite a bit of time this morning - between trying to get through my last day at work until next Tuesday, dealing with the new pick system crashing (twice) and product not fitting in the locs I assigned it to....
you're thinking too hard; offering company or a ride is never a chauvanistic act, IMHO. anyone who takes it that way needs to grow up. i don't turn down company during a wait or a walk to my car unless i think it's inconvenient for the other person. it's nice to get the offer no matter what.
Hey there, this is Mac! I didn't know you were on LJ, do you mind if I add you as a friend?
I disagree with ironymaiden that you're "thinking too hard" about this. Welcome to the complex, confusing, ever-shifting world of "trying to be a decent man." While I don't analyze every interaction I have (or I would never get anything done), I do a lot of thinking and talking about this subject. For me it is one of the driving forces of my life, to get to a place of self-knowledge and "right" action in the gender/sexuality/feminist arenas.
I think that of course it means something different when you or I wait with that woman until her ride comes. Men (and let's not forget we are white men) have a whole different kind of "impact" we carry around with us wherever we go, no matter what our intentions may be. It helps to be somewhat aware of the impact, and to act with that impact in mind. Unfortunately, it seems that the impact changes from place to place, and person to person, hence the "ever-shifting" comment above
