Oh, I know all about that! We had the same problem... briefly. Somehow when the play appeared on Moth's ebook reader, it wasn't really a question anymore. :D Moth had pre-ordered the play and I technically knew it was coming out at some point, but I felt so estranged from the fandom after DH and especially Pottermore that I didn't feel I wanted much to do with canon anymore. I just had my fanfic world and I was good with it and there were other excellent books to read and talk and dream about, of course. And suddenly there was this new thing and it sucked me right in for a couple of hours. I mean, it doesn't carry itself as much as the original books do. Felt more like a fanfic, really, but because it's edited and the so-called "word of God" and so on, it feels... different.
I can recommend reading it before going to see it, because I feel that the story itself isn't at the centre of what's so good about this play. It's more like an okay story with very lovable original characters, spiced with lots of cameos and insider gags and a 3D look at some of the problems or even some of the open questions from the original series. I am super glad I got to read it with Moth and to then re-experience it in a new light when it's brought on the stage. But you can't really spoil yourself much. It's more like... hm... like the first movie, maybe, where I knew the story so well that that wasn't what excited me at all but seeing a lot of characters come to life who had previously only been inside my head. Yeah, I think that's what watching this play is going to be like. I already love the idea of seeing a different rendition of Harry, Draco, etc. - and just imagine, a PoC Hermione at last!
Moth and I are going to see it on 22nd October. We were really late ordering our tickets, too! I didn't know you could still get seats for this or even next year, but it turns out: if you actually turn up on their doorstep, there are a few seats they don't sell online because they want to explain to people in person... well, in our case why they were selling them together even though there is an aisle between them or something. I saw the seat plan and wasn't bothered. It's gonna be so awesome to be able to see it so soon.
