Generally speaking, I think decreases look better than increases. What is the specific stitch pattern? I can try to work out a decrease for you (it's a specialty of mine, you might say).

on hats, i've always started from the top and worked my way down.
something similar to this basic hat can be altered to suit. :)

I'm glad someone's asked the question, as it's something I've been considering myself. In thinking about it, I've wondered if it's simply a matter of slip-stitching to account for the difference... though I've only thought about it in the abstract, ie., I've had too much going to sit down and work it out properly.
