There are always going to be people who disagree with each other, especially over issues of what is "offensive" or not (a matter of opinion). And, in a community, it's important to respect other people. It's a simple as that, a matter of respect. This isn't life or death here. It's whether we see images immediately or after a click. BFD.
I may not agree with the so-called "prudes" on the list as to what I find personally offensive or "not-work/child-safe" but I do understand their desire to be able to choose to view the images or not. It's not a big deal to me-- I'd rather see small pics right on the page without having to click, but if it's going to make that many other people happy, ok, fine.
Other livejournal communities are similarly self-regulating -- note, for example, that many of the mental-health oriented communities will insist on cuts for potentially "triggering" subjects like self-injury, suicide, and who knows what else-- usually, if the writer thinks it may offend, upset or trigger someone, s/he puts it behind a cut out of respect for the feelings/wishes of other people.
A broad "crochet" community cannot be the perfect fit for anyone -- there are simply too many people of too diverse backgrounds, opinions, skill levels, etc. Compromise is key, and I think you've come up with a good one for this situation.
