I may have told you this before. It's a moment of surrealistic beauty. Cage was invited to the Game Show "I've got a secret" to perform one of his pieces "Water Walk", rather a beautiful piece in my opinion. The piece was scored to include five randomly tuned radios that Cage operated during the performance. Unfortunately, there was a demarcation dispute with the electricians union who said that non union people could not operate radios and refused to let him use them. Instead he solemnly hits and pushes over the inoperative radios over.
"Tell us quite seriously whether you consider what we are about to hear music?"
".... I would call it music."
Because his (somewhat eccentric) performance is not really something that the audience is used to it does provoke laughter. He is asked is it OK for people to laugh.
Mike "Wombles theme" Batt was sued for copyright breach for including 4'33" of silence on one of his albums. It was settled out of court.

"I consider laughter preferable to tears."
