Christa's Deep Thoughts on Easter

Apr 08, 2004 07:54

By way of introduction, let me say that we moved Olivia into Harper Lee's room Tuesday night and I am loving having access to the computer 24 -7.
Also, I am high on Excedrin Migraine right now and not responsible for the contents of this post.

Okay,
Thought # 1 - This Sunday our pastor will say when he goes up to preach, "He is risen," and the congregation will answer "He is risen indeed." I love that, but it's the only day of the year that we do it. Apparently that used to be the way that Christians greeted each other. I wish we still did in a way. To me there is a comfort in the really, really ancient Christian traditions. It helps me not to be as self-centered, to say, hey, I am not the first or the last person to come by this way. Many, many others have experienced struggles and joys similar to mine. I guess we would look like dorks if we greeted each other that way. Maybe that should go on my things that I like that are not cool list, not on my Easter list. Hmmm . . .

Thought # 2 - When I was in Bible college, I refused to call it Easter. It had to be Resurrection Sunday. Was I trying to love the Lord my God with all my heart, soul, and mind, or was it basic snobbery? You be the judge.

Thought # 3 - In Louisiana the Catholic influence is so strong that many fast food places advertise "Lenten combos" during the Easter season. I thought that was so cool. I was so inspired by this, I ate a Filet-O-Fish at McDonald's on the way home.

Thought # 4 - Jeremy and I "do" Santa Claus, but not the Easter Bunny. We give them Easter baskets but they are from us. (Incidentally, I think Harper Lee has a little crush on Heath so she wants a hemp necklace like his for Easter.) This careful distinction b/t S.C. and the Easter Bunny makes us more spiritual than you.

Thought # 5 - I have never given up anything for Lent. Has anyone else? How did it go? Was it worth doing?
