So, there is this rumor that David Bowie might appear on American Idol tomorrow night and do a duet with one of the two finalists.
When I heard I got quite excited as he's been somewhat in seclusion since his heart attack that cut short the Reality tour except for being sighted at charity events and at the Film Festival premieres of "Moon" with his son Duncan.
So, I got on the Internet to see if there was any good buzz on whether he might actually be going on the show. He is known to look out for young talent so it wouldn't be a stretch of the imagination.
I know Idol fanatics love their favorites but I was shocked by what I read on the blogs and such about this proposed duet. It wasn't, as I expected, primarily excitement over their hero's opportunity to meet his idol... they were insulting DAVID BOWIE! Several people had the NERVE to say that Adam did not "need Bowie - if anything Bowie needs Adam to save his career."
Huh?
At first I was stunned speechless. Which is quite a feat, let me tell you.
What on EARTH would DAVID BOWIE need an American Idol concert contestant for?
This is a man who stayed ahead of music trends for nearly 40 years. He writes his own music, has written and arranged hundreds of songs, plays multiple instruments, has predicted multiple trends in music and electronics and the Internet, acts, paints, sculpts…
He’s _ BRILLIANT_.
David Bowie and a few of his friends shaped what music is today. And if you look back throughout his career he has always taken time out to help other artists who he felt respect for… Lou Reed and Iggy Pop to name two. Not to mention his 50th birthday concert where he invited many young bands to come play with him for charity.
Yeah he SO needs this young man who idolizes him. Not.
He is a gracious man who, if he comes out of his current seclusion, will most likely give this guy the thrill of his life.
Which he no doubt deserves for his hard work and talent.
But make no mistake, one TV Season of a hit show does in NO WAY equal a lifetime of legendary work.
Below is a representative comment, there were many like it I am shocked to say. (And for those who haven't heard David's pipes when he was truly at his best there were movies made before the Thin White Duke tour and they are on Youtube. But to me, I have to say, his voice has always sounded very rich and beautiful with a great deal of character. Just, at TWD time it seemed at it's fullest.) Oh and the bit about dueting with a "Power vocalist" ... ever hear "Under Pressure" by Queen and David Bowie? I have to say that Freddie Mercury was known for being somewhat of a 'Power Vocalist. He's also performed it with Annie Lennox and... just watch the youtube vids of his 50th birthday bash with him singing with YOUNG bands and rocking his ASS off. He looked and sounded fabulous and you can tell he was having the time of his life.
But David Bowie is an old dude now and I’m sure his pipes aren’t what they used to be (ot that they were ever that great).
So how does the thin white duke keep up with Lambert’s power vocals?
So. My defense of the Bo. A class act with a rich baritone, who makes one hell of a sexy Goblin King.
But, just by the way... if Bowie shows it is because someone begged him, not the other way around... do let's be clear.
