I Am A People

What is it about people that is so intriguing? I'm walking down a street filled with people. People selling, buying, browsing. People eating, running, talking. One man is juggling ping pong balls with his mouth. There's a couple meandering down the street playing fiddles and singing. A small, bespeckled woman offers to do a caricature of me in only five minutes. Another man is luring teenagers to take a tract with candy bars and soda. ...It's good to be a part of this crowd. I don't know anyone here, but isn't interesting that I came anyway. Why?

I hope I always take the opportunity to talk to people. It's a good thing to know who shares the world with you. There is something in us that desires to share a bit of ourselves with others, maybe alot, maybe a little. And if talking to someone will make their day just that much better, why not do it? Sometimes a bit of pleasant conversation can be quite a surprise. Once a lady at Starbucks asked me what I had planned for the weekend, and I remember being so caught off guard. "You don't even know me," I thought, but I looked up at her when she said it, and it wasn't just words to fill the space. She was waiting for an answer, and whether she was actually interested or just really good at pretending to be, it was nice to be asked. And nice to talk just a little.

At work, the powers that be introduced "Thanks to You" forms. The purpose being to acknowledge someone working with you if they do something for a customer or co-worker that's beyond the call. It was pointed out at the initiation of these that people tend to find it difficult to tell someone that they noticed a job well done or they appreciated someone going out of their way. And it is. As corny as the Thanks to Yous are, I gave one to a co-worker, and I had that incredibly shy, embarrassed feeling sweep over me. And it felt good to receive one too...as corny as they are. Sometimes we just forget stuff like that, don't we?

...people are interesting. I'm truly glad to be one. : )
