As I'm recovering I'm also gearing up for the Ink'n in the Valley Tattoo Convention and Sideshow Gathering. This used to be the highlight of my year but for several years I was lucky to survive it. But now that I'm free of the trouble maker that made several years hell I'm excited about the trip again

These skills are easy to learn quickly, relatively speaking of course. They attract people who want an oooh and an ahhhhh without really working but then lose them when the whim wears off or they realize a person has to have a passion for this because there isn't a tonne of money in it.
It's the performance we really hone, and unless a person is a true performer at heart, it's not a long term attraction.
Sideshow, fire, the latest dance craze...they all attract flakes and in true, traditional fashion, unscrupulous people.
I'm sad that you had to go through all of this.
I've had to learn to distance myself emotionally from who I work with as well. It just cuts each time their dedication wanes.
I ended up coming up with 3 styles of shows. Solo, Duo and Trio. Beyond that, anyone is a "special guest". It works. My fav to do is the trio, my least is solo but this way I know I'm covered.
I also started an apprentice program. If they have the dedication to make it through all of that, then they get trained in different things and worked act by act into the show with something developed for them. My apprentices are under contract with a no-compete clause in it to prevent exactly what Boobz is doing to you. It's sounds harsh but I think it's necessary.
You say the demand for fire is coming back? Kudos to it being that way there. Here we get told fire acts are still a dime a dozen and payable in beer. We won't get into my thoughts on that, but I say run with it while you can. Milk it for all it's worth.
I hope that your journey is healing and ItV goes well for you. I'm not sure I can make it down even for a visit, but if I do, I will be seeking you out. ;-)
