By whaich I mean, REALLY hold her. Yeah, I've had her for a few minutes at a time up 'til now, but tonight was my first chance to really spend some time at it. Between visiting friends, and coworkers, and grandparents, and aunt and uncles and the kind of family members who seem to crawl out of the woodwork when you win the lottery, and of course the nutritional needs of the average newborn, I've been largely passing her off to someone else after a few minutes. But as of about 10:30, my time has come. And it's been a fantastic couple of hours.
Twice now, I've rocked her to sleep, since she woke up fussing about 11, and apparently just wanted some contact. I can handle that.
So it's now about 12:15. Z is finally getting some well-deserved sleep, since I dozed off earlier watching Dead Space and now I'm wide awake with razor-sharp focus. Also, the Game Fuel doesn't hurt.
I'm lying on the floor, trying to read Eliot and/or type. Zoe is snoozing peacefully in her (previously unused) crib. Jackson (the min-pin) is alternating between pushing my hands off of my book, pacing, nipping at my ear, standing up to peek into the crib, and pouting in the rocking chair in the corner, as he appears to be horribly upset that I've put the baby in a cage and is doing his best to remedy the situation.
I'd put him in there too, but then he'd fuss because he can't get out, and likely wake her up. We don't have that problem with the pack'n'play (fancy-ass playpen, for the uninitiated) since the top edge of the 'bed' part of it is at about our bed level, and Jack can check up on her as he pleases. Yes, our somewhat aimless little dog has almost overnight turned into an 8.5lb ball or overprotective canine nerves. It can be quite amusing at times, like when he forbids the grandparents access to their first collective grandchild, Makes me laugh, anyway.
Speaking of laughs, the lullabye Stay Awake from Mary Poppins is playing on the CD player, and I have to smile. Z sings that to Zoe every night while trying to put her down, and after hearing it a few dozen times, my own lyrics began to creep into my mind, and now the tune just makes me grin. Evilly, I might add.
Submitted for your approval...
Stay alert,
Protect your head
From the legions or undead.
While civilization falls,
Grab your weapon, duty calls.
Now the zombies
Roam the streets,
Craving human brains to eat.
Ignore your loved ones' tortured cries,
Shoot with care, between their eyes.
So yeah, maybe I have some issues. But at least I don't actually sing that version to her.
Yet. ^^
