Unfortunate Epiphany

Yesterday evening I drove up in the late afternoon from Cupertino to Berkeley to say hi to mistersleepless before he flies back to England. It being rush hour in the Bay Area, and also a rainy day in California, every inch of the way was a hellish battle of emergency vehicle lights and jam-packed gridlock. At about the hour and a half mark, I was threading my way past Oakland and we were-- all of us, two lanes of us-- looking longingly at the carpool lane. Which, remarkably enough, was not being abused to nearly the extent that happens in the South Bay.

Just ahead of me in the rightmost lane, a monstrously huge gas-chugger of a truck signaled to move over into my middle lane. At first glance I noticed red and blue political stickers all over its back window and after a second glance I was suprised to see that they were Kerry, not Bush, in nature. I'm generally pretty nice about letting people in front of me, and in this case I was even more inclined to make some room because I figured, yeah, we're having a bad week, why make him remain behind that enormous semi as well, despite his rather obnoxious choice of car?

So I let him move over in front of me... and he drifts on over and then immediately guns it, leaps his single-occupant ass into the carpool lane with a belch of black smoke and barrels away out of sight at about 80 mph.

So, for those of you who Lost this week, my epiphany for last night: "They" are not the only ones who suck. Some of "Us" really are complete shits as well.

For consideration: so let's put those pedestals and those high horses in the garage, they never suited us in the first place
