An illustration of the kind of family I grew up with:

My father called here at work last week to talk to me, but it was my day off. A friend of mine took the call.

"Well, then, maybe you can help me out," says Da.

"I can certainly try," says Eric.

And with no preamble or explanation, my father asks, "How do you spell 'succubus'?"

Apparently Eric was able to rattle off the spelling for him without so much as a little WTFMATE pause. Da thanked him and rang off.

"Yeah," I told Eric, "that definitely sounded like something my dad would call up for. A bit weird, huh?"

Eric said it didn't really seem all that weird to him. It seemed a perfectly normal question and intelligent question coming from someone who was my father.

I've decided to take that as a back-handed compliment.
