First attempt.

t9. Pretend.

Ernie had recommended her for house prefect, tutored her dismal scores in Herbology, protected her from the whispers in the house once her mother died, and written her weekly letters throughout their sixth year.  She has always followed Ernie, turning against Potter when he supposedly hurt Justin, being the first group joining Dumbledore's Army, welcoming Finnagin as a new inductee to the group, chewing out Smith for his cowardice towards Harry, and coming back to Hogwarts to defend it from the dark wizard.  But the time comes when hiding in her friend's shadow is no longer is an option.

When the final choice is presented to her, she barely hesitates.  His example has taught her well, and now she stands on her own with the strength he has been giving her over the last seven years.

Ernie glances down at her, grim defiance in his eyes.  He will die today, she thinks.  But it will be a battle worth dying for.

She stands to her feet beside him, not following Ernie but joining him.

Her house follows the former prefect, standing in a black and yellow ripple of mixed reckless bravado and the scent of fear.

Because badgers protect their den from intruders, even when the odds are slim.
