Electricity is a wonderful thing and I'm so glad to have it back after almost 2 days without it. Thirty thousand people in Pittsburgh were without power when a storm knocked it out Friday evening. And what a storm it was. It didn't last long but it packed quite a punch.
The severe winds and hail caught everyone by surprise and damn near scared the shit out of us. It came in so fast that it caught us off guard - then it left as quickly as it came. Several trees were uprooted and some were snapped in half like toothpicks. The roofs of some houses collapsed and the brick structure of a local church sustained severe damage. An 11 year old boy was in Allegheny cemetery with his friends when a tree fell on top of him. His friends pulled him out and took him to a nearby hospital.
The amusement park Kennywood and the surrounding neighborhoods caught the worst of the storm. Several people were injured when a tree fell onto the roof of the Pavilion. The roof over the ride The Whip collapsed injuring lots of people and killing one 30 yr old woman. Several people reported seeing a funnel cloud, but the weather service hasn't confirmed that. Judging by the how quickly the winds came and went and how much damage was done I'd believe that it was a tornado.
I'm very thankful that none of my friends or loved ones were injured Friday evening.
Let me take a moment to bitch at the idiots who were driving during the power outage. When the traffic lights aren't working the intersection then becomes a 4-way stop. I witnessed several near-accidents because people were just breezing through intersections when the lights weren't working. Some weren't even slowing down. Oh well, I guess not all of us have common sense.
