Summary: Jin has always been drawn to the sea which is why he decided to become a fisherman. However the sea turns against him one day when his boat is destroyed in a storm and he is close to drowning. Jin is saved by something he thought only existed in fairytales and so an unlikely lovestory begins.
Jin felt frozen all the way to his bones. He was soaked through and shivering as he desperately tried to remember what had happened. His eyes snapped open as he remembered the storm. The boat had been smashed to pieces and Jin's last thought before he became unconscious was 'I'm going to die'. Apparently he hadn't died however and he looked around.
He was in a dark cave that was half filled with water but he was on quite a smooth rock where the water couldn't reach him. Jin groaned as he sat up; his head was pounding and his whole body was sore. He couldn't understand how he'd gotten there; there was no way that the water would've naturally led him to such a place.
Jin wrapped his arms around his body, trying to get some warmth. Even if he hadn't died from drowning, he would soon die because of the cold. He was startled when he suddenly heard a splash and a head popped up from under the water. Jin gasped when he saw the beautiful face, partially obstructed by wet strands of golden reddish hair.
"W-who are you?" he stammered. "A-aren't you c-cold?"
The one in the water merely smiled and hoisted himself up on the rock next to Jin who gasped in surprise. He'd never thought that they existed in anything other than fairytales but now he saw one in the flesh. The upper body was that of a normal man but the lower body was a fishtail that shimmered in the colours of the rainbow. Jin got teary-eyed as the sight was almost too beautiful for him to take.
"You're a mermaid", he said after awhile and a pearly laughter filled the cave.
"Not exactly a maid."
Jin thought that he had never heard such a beautiful voice in his entire life.
"But I guess that's what you humans call us even when we're male... or you just never want to think about the fact that we can be male. I'm a merman."
"Ah... sorry", Jin blushed even though he was still trembling because of the cold and the merman frowned when he noticed this.
"We need to get you out of those clothes", he said and Jin stared at him with wide eyes.
"W-what?!"
"Your clothes will only make you feel colder instead of giving you any warmth", the merman explained and he started to pull on Jin's clothes to take them off.
To Jin's surprise he felt arms wrapping around his waist and he turned his head to stare at the merman. He had to admit that the merman's body was warm however and it surprised him since he thought that mermen's bodies were supposed to be cold.
"I have to get you warm somehow... I hope you don't mind."
"No... Thank you", Jin replied. "Why did you save me?"
The merman seemed thoughtful for a bit before he replied, "I don't know, I just didn't want you to die... We mermen and mermaids see a lot of people die at sea every year and it is not our concern but somehow I felt sad when I saw you."
They looked deeply into each other's eyes for awhile before Jin broke the silence, "I'm Akanishi Jin."
"Kamenashi Kazuya", the merman said and laughed at Jin's surprised expression. "Yes, I have a full Japanese name. I've also met mermen and mermaids from other parts of the world who speak different languages and everything. We adapt to the humans living closest to us. It's more convenient that way when we go up on land sometimes."
"You go up on land?" Jin looked at Kazuya with wide eyes.
"We can change our tails into legs if we want to", Kazuya replied. "But we can't stay on land for long periods, our skin becomes too dry and we get dehydrated."
"Can you... show me? Your legs I mean... no, that also sounds wrong", Jin blushed and Kazuya laughed.
"Sure", he said and before Jin could blink the shimmering tail had turned into equally beautiful legs.
Jin blushed deeply red when he realised that he was sitting there, being embraced by a naked man while he was just as naked himself. Somehow it hadn't bothered him that much when Kazuya had had a fishtail but this was much more embarrassing.
"I can change back if this makes you too uncomfortable", Kazuya said and pushed a strand of Jin's still wet hair behind his ear.
Jin gulped, "No, it's fine."
"If you say so", Kazuya grinned impishly and pressed himself closer to Jin. "You need more warmth", he said as an explanation when Jin stared at him with almost fear in his eyes. "Don't worry, I won't molest you."
Jin laughed a laugh that sounded a bit fake to him, "I didn't think that you would."
"Saving someone and then molesting him would be simply rude", Kazuya smirked and Jin gulped again.
"Eh... so how long are we going to sit here?" Jin asked finally.
"Until the storm passes by and I can bring you safely to shore", Kazuya replied, now without the smirk. "I'm going to bring you to the house we live in when we're up on land and get you dried and give you clothes so that you won't have to be naked."
"Thanks, that'd be a huge help."
"My pleasure."
Jin didn't like the way Kazuya said 'pleasure'. Or maybe he did like it but he denied it to himself.
The situation was so weird: he was sitting in a damp cave hugging a merman. He was pretty sure that not many people got to experience such a thing. Jin bit his lip and looked everywhere than at Kazuya; he didn't really know what to do.
"Would you like to meet my family sometime?" Kazuya suddenly asked and Jin looked at him in surprise.
"Why?" he asked. "I mean... you don't like to mix with humans do you? Like you only go up to the surface when it's necessary?"
Kazuya shrugged and looked at Jin with an expressionless face, "I guess that I want to get to know you better... and figure out why I saved you."
"Sure", Jin said and smiled slightly. "I wouldn't mind."
"It's decided then", Kazuya said and smiled as well; Jin was dazzled by the intensity of Kazuya's smile. "Maybe you should get some sleep... I'll hold you to keep you warm."
Jin nodded and the laid down on the flat rock, facing each other and Jin blushed again. Kazuya caressed Jin's cheek and hummed something that sounded like a lullaby.
The merman's voice was otherworldly and Jin found that his eyelids grew heavy and soon he was in a deep sleep, dreaming about floating on high waves before someone pulled him down and made him fall deep into the ocean.

Jin had always felt a lure from the ocean and that’s why he chose to become a fisherman. The sea had been kind to him and he would always catch a lot of fish so he never lacked money or food.
That’s why he’d been so surprised by the sudden storm; had the ocean turned its back on him? But now, when he was in Kazuya’s warm arms and the merman was bringing him safely to the shore, he understood why the storm had come and broken his boat- It was all so that he could meet Kazuya.
Jin looked in awe at the little house right by the beach that Kazuya had brought him to. It was painted white and a bit worn from the strong winds from the ocean but Jin thought that it was perfect.
“Come on in and I’ll find you something to wear”, Kazuya said. “I think that I have something your size, one of the mermen has a very similar build.”
Jin followed Kazuya through the house, up the stairs to one of the bedrooms where Kazuya found some sweatpants and a t-shirt for Jin to wear.
“Towels are in there”, Kazuya said and pointed at the door across the hall. “I’ll be right back.”
The merman walked towards another room and Jin stared after him, letting his eyes roam over the slim body and when Kazuya had disappeared into a room, Jin blushed. Why the hell was he checking out another guy? He walked across the hall, entered a bathroom and, finding a white, fluffy towel, dried himself off before putting on the clothes which fitted him quite nicely.
A knock on the door made him turn around and Kazuya entered the room now wearing white, loose pants and a pink t-shirt. Jin thought that he looked absolutely adorable.
“Oh good, the clothes fit”, Kazuya said. “I’m sorry for not finding any nicer clothes but the guy who owns them is pretty much a slob and doesn’t get out of the house the few times he’s on land.”
“It’s okay”, Jin said smiling. “I don’t mind.”
“I’m afraid that we don’t have any food”, Kazuya continued. “We don’t really eat the same things as humans or as often.”
“What do you eat?” Jin asked curiously.
“We hunt fish mostly and eat them raw, bones and everything.”
Jin made a grimace; he kind of wished that he hadn’t asked since now the image of Kazuya sinking his teeth into a living fish with a bloodthirsty grin was stuck in his mind. Kazuya smiled amusedly and grabbed Jin’s wrist.
“Come on, let’s go and sit down”, Kazuya started leading him down the stairs and pushed him down on a white couch in the living room. “Unless you don’t have someone to go home to and show that you’re okay…”
“I have no one”, Jin said. “My mother died a few years ago.”
“Oh, I’m sorry”, Kazuya sat down next to Jin with a sad expression on his face.
“No, it’s fine.”
“I’m not used to being alone for a long time”, Kazuya said. “We’re always living in our group and we don’t have a lot of space since we don’t want to be discovered. And I have a half-brother.”
“Really? I wish that I had a brother”, Jin said.
“It’s nice to have one”, Kazuya said and then they sat in silence for awhile, just looking at each other.
Kazuya was trying to figure out why he felt so pulled towards Jin and Jin was trying to figure out why he wanted to kiss Kazuya. He wasn’t gay; was he? The silence was interrupted by a loud gurgle from Jin’s stomach.
“Ah, you must eat something!” Kazuya said.
“I don’t want to leave”, Jin said and then blushed when he realised what he’d said.
“You can come back tomorrow”, Kazuya said grinning. “I’ll make sure to have the house better prepared for you then.”
Somehow that sounded a bit… perverted to Jin’s ears but he didn’t mind that much. He asked for directions into town and he realised that his house wasn’t far away from Kazuya’s which made him happy. Jin lingered a bit at the door when they said goodbye and Kazuya winked at him and said ‘tomorrow’, the word filled with unspoken promises.
***
The next day Jin had woken up early, eager to go see Kazuya. He was nervous as well, not knowing what to expect. Kazuya seemed so predatory at moments and it made Jin a little scared… but it also excited him.
He got dressed with slightly trembling hands, fumbling with the buttons of his shirt and he cursed himself mentally. Nothing would happen, they would just talk. They were both guys after all and Kazuya probably had some gorgeous mermaid girlfriend down in the ocean depths. The merman hadn’t mentioned one though…
Jin shook his head and stared at himself in the mirror. He didn’t exactly own any fancy clothes since he was just a fisherman but he’d dressed in his best dark jeans and a simple white shirt. His long black hair was slightly tousled and he thought that he actually looked quite sexy. He grabbed a sandwich before he put on his shoes, grabbed a coat and left his house.
There was a weird bounce in his step as he walked towards Kazuya’s house and he scolded himself for acting like a schoolgirl in love. Love? Jin stopped in his tracks. He couldn’t have fallen in love with the merman, it was too soon and besides, Jin wasn’t even gay!
Before he knew it he was standing in front of Kazuya’s door and when he lifted his hand to knock the door opened even before he had the chance to.
“I’ve been waiting”, Kazuya said, smiling and Jin stared at him.
Kazuya was wearing a shimmering blue silk robe and from what Jin could judge, nothing else. Jin gulped; okay so maybe something would happen.
“Eh, so you didn’t just wake up?” Jin asked with a nervous expression on his face and Kazuya chuckled.
“I thought that I made it quite clear that I want you but maybe you’re too dense to take a hint.”
Jin stared at Kazuya with an incredulous expression on his face and Kazuya rolled his eyes.
“Are you in or are you out?” Kazuya smirked. “Well, I’m the one who’s going to be in but you get the point.”
Jin stuttered something incoherent and blushed. He couldn’t believe that he hadn’t just turned around and walked away when Kazuya had told him that he wanted him. Or walked away when Kazuya said that he actually wanted to top him. Letting this girly guy top him? What was he thinking?
He took a step closer to Kazuya who instantly dragged him into the house and closed the door, pinning Jin against it, kissing him passionately. Jin’s wrists were trapped against the wood by Kazuya’s slim but strong hands. The ribbon that tied together Kazuya’s robe had loosened and completely exposed the merman’s front.
When the kiss broke, Jin looked down and blushed while Kazuya smirked.
“Do you like what you see, Jin?” he asked seductively but Jin only blushed more and couldn’t reply.
He had seen it before but not when it was… erect. Kazuya released his grip on Jin’s wrists and turned around to walk up the stairs, looking over his shoulder and beckoning Jin to follow. Jin followed with slightly shaky legs and he took a deep breath to calm himself down. Kazuya led Jin to his bedroom and made the fisherman lie down on the bed.
“I’ll be careful”, Kazuya said and started unbuttoning the shirt Jin had had problems with buttoning not long ago. “I want this to be at least as enjoyable for you as it’ll be for me.”
Jin nodded and his breath caught in his throat when Kazuya bent down to suck on a nipple and flicked his tongue over it. Kazuya let his hand run down from Jin’s neck to his chest, on the way brushing over the collarbone and Jin squirmed from the contact. The merman noticed that and with a quite evil smirk, he switched his attention from Jin’s nipple to his collarbone, sucking on it.
“Ah, Kazu”, Jin moaned and Kazuya raised an eyebrow at the nickname but he didn’t mind and he continued teasing Jin’s collarbone with his tongue while using his hands to stimulate the man’s nipples. “Ah… you’re evil.”
Kazuya chuckled and stopped his ministrations on Jin’s collarbone to crawl upwards and kiss him. Jin wrapped his arms around Kazuya’s neck as the kiss deepened and the merman let his hands slide over Jin’s stomach and lower… The man gasped when Kazuya cupped his manhood through his jeans. Kazuya rubbed his hand against Jin’s crotch teasingly before he removed his hand and unbuttoned Jin’s jeans, dragging them down.
“You’re a big boy”, Kazuya commented, licking his lips and making Jin blush. “Maybe I should let you top sometime in the future… but for now, I’ll stay in this position.”
Kazuya nudged Jin’s legs apart and sat down between them, leaning over him to search for something in the drawer of the bedside table. When he settled back, Jin could see that he was holding a tube of lube and Jin blushed again. The merman coated his fingers thoroughly and then let one finger rub over Jin’s entrance a couple of times.
“Relax”, Kazuya said before pushing his finger inside of Jin who winced a bit at the unfamiliar feeling but relaxed when Kazuya kissed him.
The merman carefully moved his finger inside of Jin for awhile before he added another finger and then yet another. Soon Jin was moaning in pleasure and pushing himself against Kazuya’s fingers, wanting more. Kazuya removed his fingers, ignoring the whimper of protest from Jin, and coated his erection with lube, positioning himself at Jin’s entrance.
“This might hurt a bit”, Kazuya said and then kissed Jin passionately to distract him as he slowly pushed in and Jin’s groans of discomfort drowned in Kazuya’s mouth.
They were both out of breath when the kiss broke and Kazuya tried to keep still, giving Jin time to adjust. Jin gazed up at him through hazy eyes and smiled.
“You can move now”, Jin said. “I can take it.”
Kazuya nodded and started rocking his hips, slowly at first but then picking up the pace when Jin’s moans took a higher pitch and Kazuya knew that he’d hit the right spot. When he felt himself getting closer to release, he wrapped his hand around Jin’s erection and pumped it, eliciting more moans from the man.
“I think I’m going to…” Jin didn’t even get to finish the sentence as the pleasure became too much for him and he came with a moan, his seeds covering their stomachs.
Jin’s insides clenched when he came and Kazuya followed soon after, spending his seeds inside of Jin. They laid motionless, just staring into each other’s eyes.
“I really like you, Jin”, Kazuya said softly and Jin smiled.
“I really like you too…”

When Jin and Kazuya had finally managed to properly get out of the bed and get clothed, it was already late and Jin had to go home. They’d spent most of the day having sex, with slight breaks for Jin to eat and catch his breath. When Jin opened the front door to leave, he almost bumped into a smaller man with black hair and dark eyes that looked at him with a frown.
“Tat-chan”, Kazuya said in surprise when he peeked around Jin to see what was stopping him from leaving. “I didn’t know that you would be here today.”
“Yeah, well here I am”, Tatsuya said dryly. “And here he is.”
“Oh right, Tat-chan, this is Akanishi Jin. Jin, this is Ueda Tatsuya, my half-brother.”
“It’s very nice to meet you”, Jin said and bowed but Tatsuya just observed him coolly.
Kazuya frowned, “You better leave”, he said to Jin. “But I’ll see you tomorrow, at your place.”
Jin nodded and smiled at Kazuya before he passed Tatsuya and soon he was out of sight.
“Is that the human that you saved?” Tatsuya asked Kazuya who nodded. “I think I know why you’re so pulled to him and why you felt the need to save him…”
Kazuya’s eyes widened, “What’s the reason?”
Tatsuya looked at Kazuya solemnly, “I think you’ll have to sit down.”
Kazuya suddenly felt very nervous.
***
Jin paced back and forth in his little living room and frowned; why hadn’t Kazuya showed up? It was already afternoon and Kazuya still hadn’t come. Jin made a decision and quickly put on his shoes before he walked towards Kazuya’s house.
The windows were completely dark and there was no indication of life in the house and Jin was filled with dread when he knocked on the door. No one came to open no matter how many times he knocked and he walked around the house, trying to see something through the windows but everything was still. Jin thought that maybe he’d mistaken the day and that they were supposed to meet the next day so he decided to wait.
Jin waited for a very long time, he walked to Kazuya’s house every day but no one ever showed up. He waited for days, weeks, months… a year but no one showed up. Jin was unable to forget about the merman but sometimes he thought that it was some kind of dream he had in the delirium of the storm. However, what he’d felt was too real to be a dream and he still had the sweatpants and the t-shirt that he’d borrowed.
He had bought a new boat after the storm and sometimes he even hoped that there would be a new storm that would bring him to Kazuya but it never happened. Jin lived the rest of his life in loneliness, dreaming about someone he would never meet again.

“Kazuya”, Tatsuya said seriously when they were seated on the couch. “Akanishi was the last name of the woman your father had a brief affair with right after he married my mother. I confronted him about it and he admitted that she had given birth to a son… Jin. Kazu, Jin is your half-brother. Half merman, that’s why you felt so drawn to him.”
Kazuya stared at Tatsuya with wide eyes, refusing to believe what he was hearing.
“My brother? No… he can’t be.”
“I’m sorry, but it’s true. I would never lie to you, Kazuya, you know that.”
Kazuya sobbed and covered his mouth with his hand to muffle the sounds while Tatsuya patted his back. They sat in silence for awhile; only the ocean waves and sniffles coming from Kazuya could be heard.
“I can’t stay here”, Kazuya said finally. “I’ll go back to the ocean and never come back…”
Tatsuya nodded, “That’s probably for the best.”
They walked down to the shore, slipping into the water and changed their legs back to fishtails. Kazuya took one last, longing look towards the direction of the town Jin lived in.
“Goodbye Jin… I love you.”
Kazuya dove and swam to the depths, leaving his heart on land, unknowingly carrying Jin’s heart with him.
