Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 | Chapter 3

To Kazuya’s surprise, Jin did keep his promise. When the phone rang little after a week from their lunch, Kazuya expected it to be his mother calling to check up on him. Therefore he was quite shocked at hearing a familiar male voice on the other line.

“It’s me, Jin”, Jin said. “I just called to ask if you want to meet up or something.”

“Uh, yeah”, Kazuya said. “When do you want to meet?”

“How about now?”

The doorbell rang and when Kazuya opened the door, he found a grinning Jin standing outside. The detective rolled his eyes but let the other man come in and they settled on the sofa.

“How are you doing?” Jin asked and looked at Kazuya as if he genuinely cared. “I hope that you haven’t been drinking all by yourself.”

Kazuya shook his head and looked quite grumpy; what did Jin think of him?

“Good boy”, Jin ruffled Kazuya’s hair and the younger man blinked.

“Have you mistaken me for a dog?” he asked and Jin looked at him with a smirk.

“Well, you do share some similarities with one. You’re good at following people around, you have beautiful brown eyes and you’re adorable when you pout.”

Kazuya didn’t know what to reply so instead he stared at Jin with wide eyes and a slight blush on his cheeks. That made Jin’s smile widen and he patted Kazuya’s hair. The younger man became more and more confused; why was Jin acting like this? Somehow Kazuya had been reduced to a six year old again and Jin had the role of the teasing older boy who he admired.

“Why are you doing this?” Kazuya asked weakly.

“I want to pick up where we left of”, Jin said, serious now. “I missed your transformation from that awkward little boy to the man that you are now… I don’t want to miss anything more.”

“You sound like a father”, Kazuya bit his lip so hard that it almost bled.

“I’m sorry”, Jin pulled the younger man into an embrace and Kazuya gripped his shirt tightly. “Your mother contacted mom when it happened and I wanted to be there for you but… I couldn’t just reappear into your life; I thought that you would hate me.”

“It was such a useless way to die”, Kazuya sobbed. “He refused to give the robber his wallet and then… It happened on the street right outside of our apartment. I saw him, the body, when I came home from school.”

“That’s why you became a detective”, Jin said and Kazuya nodded, leaning his head on Jin’s shoulder. “I wish I’d gotten the courage to contact you and offer my comfort… I know what it’s like not to have a father. It’s different for me though since he died before I was old enough to remember him.”

Kazuya withdrew from Jin’s embrace and dried his tears.

“It’s okay”, he said. “You don’t owe me anything and you should worry about your own problems instead of my old ones.”

“I just want to take care of you”, Jin said. “You’re like a little brother to me.”

“Great, a little brother”, Kazuya mumbled. “I don’t need to be taken care of; I’m fine on my own.”

Jin just looked into Kazuya’s eyes and finally the younger man had to look away; it felt like the singer could see right through him.

“Have you heard my song called ‘Care’?” Jin asked and Kazuya nodded; it was his favourite song. “I wrote it when I heard about your father… it took some time to get it released though.”

Kazuya looked at Jin in surprise and the singer actually looked kind of embarrassed. The younger man smiled but felt more tears threatening to fall.

“Thank you”, he said, his voice thick with emotion. “Thank you so much.”

Jin and Kazuya spent almost every day together for a month, just talking about practically everything. Then Jin had to resume activities as a singer and they couldn’t spend as much time together as before. Kazuya decided to go back to work as well but the two of them kept in touch by sending many mails to each other every day.

“Has he fucked you yet?” Ryo asked Kazuya while they went through a large pile of paperwork.

“No!” Kazuya looked scandalised. “Of course not, we’re just friends. He’s my very straight childhood friend… Why do you assume that I would be bottoming?”

“Come on”, Ryo raised an eyebrow. “You adore him as a puppy would adore its master and you’re a total girl when it comes to him. Besides, if he’s ‘straight’ he wouldn’t let anyone fuck him because that would hurt his pride as a man.”

“It sounds like you speak from experience”, Kazuya tried to look innocent as he skimmed through the sentences of a report.

“Absolutely not! I just… put myself into his way of thinking. You know, like when we put ourselves into the mindset of the killer.”

“Keep telling yourself that, Nishikido.”

It wasn’t like Kazuya hadn’t fantasised about having sex with Jin but he wasn’t even sure if he’d want it to happen for real. What he and Jin shared was deeper than any other friendship he’d ever had, not that he’d had many, and he didn’t want to ruin that.

Kazuya didn’t want to have sex with Jin while he was still thinking about Shiori for that matter. The detective prayed that they would find her soon so that Jin’s mind would finally get some rest. Jin seemed to be so tired all the time after he’d begun working again and Kazuya was worried. He was used to being tired all the time while working on cases but they shouldn’t work Jin too hard considering all that he’d been through.

The next time they met was a late evening when Kazuya was relaxing on the sofa. His doorbell rang and when he went to open the door, Jin stood outside. The singer looked like a complete mess with dark circles around his eyes and a miserable expression on his face.

“Jin, what’s the matter?” Kazuya asked worriedly while leading Jin to the soda.

“Nishikido-san contacted me”, Jin said as he sank down on the sofa and Kazuya felt that his breath reeked of alcohol.

“Nishikido? Why would he contact you?”

“A body was found washed up on a shore a few miles from Tokyo… it was identified as Shiori.”

Kazuya gasped, “Oh Jin, I’m so sorry! Why didn’t Nishikido tell me about this?”

“Maybe he knew that you’d want to be the one to tell me”, Jin said darkly. “He didn’t want to burden you with it… Do you have any alcohol?”

“Do you really think that you should be drinking?” Kazuya asked and Jin looked at him with puppy eyes. “Oh alright…”

Kazuya sat beside Jin while the singer drank to numb his feelings. Maybe it was just pure shock since he hadn’t known Shiori for that long but he’d really thought that he could get something real with her.

“You’re so good to me, Kazu”, Jin slurred. “I’ll pay you back for this”, he gestured towards the beer cans and managed to knock the empty vodka bottle off the table, it hit the carpet with a thud.

“That’s not necessary”, Kazuya said and tried to ignore that Jin’s other hand rested quite far up on his thigh.

“But I want to repay you”, Jin looked at Kazuya with unfocused eyes which made him look like a little kitten. “Let me repay you.”

Jin leaned closer to Kazuya who leaned backwards but was effectively stopped by the sofa’s armrest. Kazuya could feel Jin’s warm breath wash over his face and the tension and stench of alcohol were intense.

“What are you doing?” Kazuya’s voice trembled as Jin’s hand clumsily caressed his cheek.

“You’re so pretty”, Jin mumbled. “Why are you so pretty?”

Kazuya laughed nervously, “Because of my genes, I guess… I think that you should go to bed.”

“Beds are good”, Jin bit his lip. “Sofas are good too.”

The singer crawled on top of Kazuya and pinned him down; their lips were only millimetres away from touching.

“You’re not lying on the sofa though”, Kazuya pointed out. “You’re lying on me.”

Jin nodded and tried to make his eyes focus on Kazuya but they crossed a bit and he decided to close them. Kazuya blinked and then he felt a pair of warm lips massaging against his own. For a moment he tried to resist but finally he succumbed to the temptation. He closed his eyes and opened his mouth when Jin greedily demanded entrance.

Jin tasted like beer and vodka and faint traces of smoke. Was Jin a smoker? Kazuya had never seen him with a cigarette.

The singer explored Kazuya’s mouth almost brutally and Kazuya whimpered and squirmed underneath Jin’s exploring hands.

“Jin, no”, he gasped when the kiss broke because of lack of oxygen. “You’ll regret this when you’re sober. Please, just let’s go to sleep.”

Jin looked at him, frowning, before he finally nodded and Kazuya sighed in relief. He managed to get Jin into the bedroom and onto the bed.

“Undress me”, Jin said with a pout and Kazuya raised an eyebrow. “Jeans are not comfy to sleep in.”

Kazuya sighed and helped Jin get out of his jeans and then tucked him in under the covers.

“Goodnight Jin”, Kazuya said and was about to return to the sofa when Jin pulled him down on the bed and refused to let go.

“Night Kazu”, he mumbled and fell asleep.

Kazuya groaned; he’d had no idea that Jin was such a bad drunk. He wiggled into a better position and tried to fall asleep, listening to Jin’s steady breaths.

Kazuya snuggled closer to the warm form beside him without opening his eyes and yawned sleepily. He hadn’t slept so well for a very long time. The warm form groaned and Kazuya frowned, he wasn’t aware of the fact that he had a pillow that made sounds. He opened his eyes and squinted at the light that flooded in through a crack in the curtains.

“Jin”, he mumbled when he realised that he was snuggled against the older man and he remembered what had happened the previous night.

Kazuya thought that he should let Jin sleep since the singer would probably have a hangover from hell later. He carefully slid off the bed and grabbed some clean clothes from the closer before locking himself into the bathroom. Kazuya groaned at the state of the clothed he’d slept in while he pulled them off; he wouldn’t want to sleep in a suit ever again.

He sighed when the warm water rays of the shower hit his skin and he thought back on the kiss he’d shared with Jin… or rather: the kiss Jin had taken from him. If he’d let Jin take more from him and it would’ve been as brutal as the kiss, he’d probably be in a lot of pain right now. But part of Kazuya still craved it; he’d endure any amount of pain as long as he could be with Jin.

When he stepped out of the bathroom, Jin was occupied with rolling around the bed, groaning in pain.

“Good morning”, Kazuya said cheerily and opened the curtains, making Jin hide his face in a pillow to avoid the light. “I hope that you had a nice time last night.”

“Why are you shouting?” Jin whimpered. “I’m not deaf.”

Kazuya fetched aspirin and a glass of water that he placed on the bedside table before he poked Jin’s side.

“Take the painkillers”, Kazuya said and when Jin didn’t move, he knelt beside the older man and poked him in the sides repeatedly.

The detective yelped when Jin suddenly turned around and dragged him down on top of him. Kazuya stared at Jin in shock as they were very close to each other and their noses were touching. Did Jin remember their kiss?

“Stop poking me”, Jin growled.

“You need those painkillers”, Kazuya said weakly.

“Now I need them because you bruised my sides”, Jin pouted which made their lips brush together and Kazuya stiffened and tried to pull away but Jin wouldn’t let him. “Why are you freaking out?”

“Why aren’t you?”

“We kissed last night.”

“You remember that?” Kazuya’s eyes widened.

“I can take liquor pretty well”, Jin said and winced. “That doesn’t mean that I behave well though.”

“It’s alright…. I understand since you were drunk and all. You’re straight and you were just grieving Shiori’s death.”

“I didn’t love her. I mean, I was in love with her but I didn’t know her well enough to truly love her… now when I know what happened to her, I can finally get some peace and move on.”

“Uh, can you let go of me though?” Kazuya asked, he wasn’t really sure what Jin wanted to say.

“Maybe I’ve fallen in the crazy love”, Jin mumbled in English and Kazuya vaguely recognised the words from one of Jin’s songs.

“What are you talking about?”

Instead of answering, Jin kissed Kazuya. The kiss was nothing like the one the previous night; this one was gentle, slow and a bit hesitant as if Jin wanted to make sure that Kazuya was okay with it. Kazuya was more than okay with it and he got tears in his eyes because he was so happy as he responded to the kiss.

It seemed so surreal that Jin would like him… Kazuya had dreamt about Jin confessing to him since they were kids.

When the kiss came to an end, Kazuya was sure that he’d turned into mush. He was scared to open his eyes in case everything was a dream and would dissolve right in front of him.

“Kazuya”, Jin said and Kazuya finally opened his eyes; it wasn’t a dream. “Would you mind going on a date with me?”

Shaking his head was all Kazuya could do since he was struck speechless. Jin smiled happily and ran a hand through Kazuya’s slightly wet hair. They were enveloped by the bright morning light and everything seemed too good to be true. It probably was.
