Isamot considered considered Kyle's words carefully, turning them over slowly in his mind, trying to understand his fellow Lantern's point of view. But eventually he had to shake his head. "I'm sorry, Kyle. I still do not see the appeal."
Kyle made a frustrated noise and gestured wildly with his beer. Beside him, Guy ducked the flailing bottle. "I don't know how else to explain it! It's...it's a kiss!"
"So you have said," Isamot said.
"Many times," Vath muttered. Soranik and Iolande hid their smiles in their drinks.
"I understand that it is the first step in your mating process," Isamot went on, "but this doesn't explain the romanticism you humans attach to the act."
"It's not just about mating," Kyle said. Guy snorted and Kyle shot him a scowl. "It's not always about mating," Kyle amended. "It's about closeness and intimacy--"
"Those words mean the same thing," Isamot pointed out.
"Someone help me out here!" Kyle appealed. "You all have lips, you know what kissing is like."
Iolande shook her head. "I enjoy kissing," she said, "but my people do not attach the same importance to it. How you humans became convinced that kisses could communicate anything more than physical pleasure, or that they could contain some portion of the soul, I do not know."
"Sora..."
"Oh, no, " Soranik held up her hand, laughing. "I am not getting into a discussion of kissing with my ex-boyfriend. I know better than that, thank you."
Vath just glared at Kyle until he turned to Guy. "Guy," Kyle wheedled. "Partner. Buddy. You're with me on this, right?"
"'Course I am," Guy said, plucking the beer out of Kyle's hand before he got brained with it. "But I'm no good at explaining these things. I'm a doer, not a talker. You want a demonstration, that I can handle."
Iolande straightened up in her seat. "That's the solution," she told Kyle.
He blinked. "What solution?"
"For how to explain." Iolande said. "Demonstrate."
Kyle waved a hand between them uncertainly. "You want me to...?"
"Not with me," Iolande said impatiently. "What use would it be to demonstrate on someone who doesn't approach the kiss the same way? No. Demonstrate with Guy."
"Uh." Kyle shot Guy a sidelong glance. "I don't think Guy's interested."
"And who's been telling us about the magical properties of a good kiss for almost an hour now?" Vath said impatiently. "You saying it's bullshit now?"
"No!" Kyle protested.
"Or are you just not a good kisser?" Soranik asked, smiling.
Kyle pointed at her. "That is not fair."
"Okay," Guy said. He drained Kyle's confiscated beer and plunked it down on the table, then his own. "Looks like we gotta defend your honor, here."
Kyle's head jerked around to face Guy again. "Wait, what?"
"They need to see a really spectacular kiss?" Guy said. He smirked. "Well, I'm your man. C'mere."
Kyle's mouth opened and closed silently a couple of times. Then he glanced at the expectant audience and his resolve firmed. "Okay. But we better stand up. Kissing across chairs is either brief or awkward."
"Fine with me," Guy pushed out his chair and stood, gesturing for Kyle to join him.
But once he was on his feet, Kyle hesitated. This was Guy. How was he supposed to start kissing Guy?
"You're over thinking it now," Guy said. "Just--" He stepped in close and suddenly there was a warm hand on Kyle's jaw and a mouth on his and he was supposed to be kissing, right? So he relaxed and kissed back. Guy's lips were surprisingly soft, but the touch of his mouth was firm, slow and confident, like he had all the time in the world for this. Kyle leaned into the caress a little, one hand going automatically to Guy's hip to steady himself, and when Guy's tongue brushed his lips, Kyle didn't even think before opening to him.
Deepening the kiss was like swallowing down heat, filling the pit of his stomach with warmth that spread slowly through his body. Kyle felt almost light headed. He pressed closer to Guy's solid frame, moaned a little when Guy wrapped an arm around him and sucked, just a little on his tongue. God, Guy's mouth, that expressive mouth, hot and wet, on Kyle's... Kyle could feel his pulse pounding through his body, now, and Guy seemed to feel it every time Kyle's breath caught, seemed to catch every moan, because the kiss just kept getting better.
Guy started to draw away but no, Kyle wanted this to be just as good for him, so he curled both hands around the back of Guy's neck and pulled him back in, letting the kiss get sloppy and hungry, let Guy see that Kyle wanted. Guy groaned now, claiming Kyle's mouth for a rough, urgent moment before easing up again and it was good, better than good, right, perfect.
But eventually they had to part. Kyle's lips felt puffy when he flicked his tongue over them, but he almost went in for another kiss anyway when Guy's eyes followed the motion and went dark. "Good?" Guy asked, voice low and a bit rough.
Amazing. But all Kyle did was nod. "Yeah."
"Good enough to repeat?" Guy pressed. His hands flexed slightly against Kyle's back, a tiny, unconscious gesture. He wasn't smirking, just looking right at Kyle, gaze never wavering.
Kyle thought about kissing his partner, his best friend, thought about leaning into Guy, and warmth, and feeling Guy hang onto him, and smiled slowly. "Yeah," he said quietly. "Definitely."
"Okay, now we believe you."
Right. Audience. Awkwardly, Kyle pulled away from Guy and turned back to Iolande, Soranik, Vath, and Isamot. "So. Um. Effective demonstration, then?"
"No," Isamot said, tongue flickering in clear amusement. "But Guy swore that if we could just get you to kiss him, he could convince you to give the two of you a try."
Kyle turned to Guy, startled. "This was a plan?"
"Well, shit," Guy said. "Every time I tried to ask you out it was all, 'Sure, pal, a beer would be nice.'"
Kyle blushed.
Vath smirked. "I begin to understand why you prefer to communicate by kissing."
