So far this weekend, I've stitched the shoulder pads back into place, cleaned up both arm holes (which involved folding the lining into the seam allowance and sewing it back down, plus sewing the shoulder snaps back on), and done the paint test.
I'm very grateful to the folks who reminded me to buy a thimble. It was surprisingly easy to get through most of the leather and I hit the existing holes more often than not, but every time I reached a seam where it was doubled over, or when I had to do the should snaps (which involved going through six layers of leather and had bent my needle in a gentle U by the end), I sure needed it. I probably should have used heavier thread, but I honestly didn't realize how fine the spool I had bought was until I started sewing. However, it seems pretty strong, and this is just an edge bit, so there's not going to be any stress on it.
The paint test was very successful. Good color, and it doesn't crack when I bend and scrunch the test piece. Yay! The only downside is that doing thin coats, which is necessary to not have brush marks and also (I believe) to prevent the cracking, means that at least four coats are necessary. It'll probably look better with five. Yikes, that's a lot of painting. I guess I better get to it!
But before I started the painting, I thought I'd share pics of me in everything I have so far, including the wig. All that remains is the painting, permanently attaching the belt (it's just belted over top of stuff here), and the logo.
My head is cut off in the photos under the cut. I'm happy to share pics of me with my head (and the wig) in there, just not on my journal. Drop me an e-mail at crimsonquills AT gmail DOT com if you want non-cropped pictures!
You can't see the boot detail there, alas, but they are awesome.
