"Emotion: Agitation or disturbance of mind; vehement or excited mental state." It is also a powerful and irrational monster. -The Criminologist
Your attitude is your choice. It can be constructive or destructive.
A girl asked me not long ago what was fun to do in Bremerton. Whatever you do is potentially fun. Sometimes, fun requires a bit of craziness. I have fun at work whenever I can.
I got an MP3 player which helps. I work at the Kitsap Sun, our cities local Newspaper. I don't write for the company, I work in the Factory or Mailroom. We are the low faces on the company totem pole. If theres heavy lifting to be done, we are enlisted without exception to carry office supplies into various locations of the main building and if something goes missing we are expected to carry the blame as well.
My tasks include folding paper, loading paper into a machine, and setting paper onto a pallete.
Sometimes, I get into a groove and I just flow and it's great. Time zips by and I feel a bit charged when I get home. I work two shifts a day typically. Noon and then Midnight. The midnight ends around three in the AM. My sleep schedule is sorta funky.
My point here is that work can feel like play. Consider the child home from school for the summer, reclined on the couch, their face blank, eyes dull. Soo bored... What to do?
If they make the mistake of asking their parents what they should do, parents are quick to suggest Cleaning ones Room or Doing Dishes, Mowing a Lawn or something productive like that.
The bored child recoils, skin crawling.
Or perhaps the parent realizes the child is looking not for the satisfaction of a job well done but something to satisfy unspoken cravings. Read a Book sounds too much like work to some.
Paint a picture or Write some Poetry! Express those stirring yearnings and squirrely perspectives.
Too often, fun comes with a price tag. Too poor to dance in a club? Dance in your home!
People sometimes turn to Television to fill their Hollow Soul.
People on television don't watch television. They have conversations and adventures!
Just look at these Santas.
And really, we have entertainment devices so advanced it's astonishing that the Bored Human isn't extinct.
I mean, we've got video games...
and entertainment centers and Cellphones, portable mp3 players, Laptops, Boardgames, and Amusement Parks, Golf Courses, Zoos,
and Malls.
Bremerton has Art Galleries and in some bars on some nights, Live Music. There are open Mike Nights.
And all this, this is stuff that wasn't even available to people a thousand years ago who managed to come up with ingenius ways of entertaining themselves. Live theatre, Poetry Clubs, Potlatches, and recreational Combat (of varying degrees of lethality)
Conversation used to be a more social activity. People now talk online or through their phones. It's hard to get a social movement moving when all the peices are moving in different rooms, cities, states...
I think its fun enough just dressing like a Clown.
"Clowns always speak of the same thing, they speak of hunger; hunger for food, hunger for sex, but also hunger for dignity, hunger for identity, hunger for power. In fact, they introduce questions about who commands, who protests." - Dario Fo (Italian playwright/fool)
But there are some who take it further. The Clandestine Insurrectionary Rebel Clown Army or CIRCA are activists who are SERIOUSLY WACKY.
The rebel clowns that make up CIRCA embody life's contradictions, they are both fearsome and innocent, wise and stupid, entertainers and dissenters, healers and laughing stocks, scapegoats and subversives.
But you may not be interested in being a revolutionary or playing dress up just to have a good time.
And indeed, all you really need is a good buddy
and something to do together.
If you're feeling too uptight, look to Children. Walk by a schoolyard at recess. They'll be giggling and running around like two legged rhinos and roaring triumphantly, climbing on stuff like ants...crazy.
Remember, we are born knowing how to have a good time.
Some people forget
but you won't.
