For those of you who don't live in the Greater Capital District of NY, we've got a little special election going on tomorrow. It's to decide who will fill the vacant seat of the 20th Congressional District. This seat was vacated by Kristen Gillibrand when Gov. Paterson named her to replace Hillary Clinton in the Senate, who left her seat to become Secretary of State. Got all that?
The election pits NY Assemblyperson Jim Tedisco (R) against semi-successful businessperson Scott Murphy (D). But you'd never know that, because according to the ads that are run EVERY FUCKING 5 MINUTES ON EVERY FUCKING LOCAL CHANNEL, the candidates are actually Jebus and Satan. (Curiously, Jebus and Satan seem to trade appearances from ad to ad.)
Seriously, it's been a tiresome month of nonstop vitreol. Apparently, the financing rules are a bit different for special elections, so the parties themselves are allowed to pour money into ads. And boy have they. Part of the reason is that the race is too close to call. The other part is that the Dems REALLY don't want to lose the seat, as the media is making this out to be some sort of micro-referendum on Obama and the party in general. I don't get that, really, it's only one district after all. But media types aren't a very bright lot. Anyway, add in the fact that the GOP wants that seat back really bad; 20-NY was a solidly Republican district for aeons until Gillibrand knocked off John Sweeney in a campaign filled with mudslinging. They've had sand in their craw ever since, so they're throwing the kitchen sink at Murphy.
Most of the ads are really pathetic. Both of the assholes accuse each other of supporting the AIG bonuses, Wall St. corruption, blah blah blah. It's particularly annoying for a cranky curmudgeon like myself who knows that neither of these douchebags is going to make a lick of difference. Hell, I don't even live in NY-20. But I have to sit through all the fucking ads, when all I really want to do is watch Big Bang Theory in peace, FFS.
