There is darkness when his blue eyes flutter open, the air cool on his skin as he tries to sit up. The attempt is a failure, however, as he notices the warmth on his side. A head of brown hair meets his eyes, fair skin peeking out from under the covers and he sighs; the most surprising thing for him being the fact that he’s already gotten used to this.

It’s soft, he thinks as he caresses the still sleeping man’s hair, feeling more than seeing the small smile that crept upon the Italian’s face. It’s strange how comfortable he feels at that moment; the cool air soothing him as he waits with his ‘friend’ for the dawn to come.

Their meeting had been unexpected -quite strange too- but he still felt glad for it. Admittedly, the brunet annoyed him at first seeing as the only thing he could do was eat, sleep, flirt with women, get captured, then thrown back at him. You can’t really blame him for being so irate at those times.

But he was determined. Feliciano Vargas, albeit being a bit weak, was strong in heart. He loved and felt with all of his heart, and when he loved something, he would fight for it until the end. That was one of the characteristics that attracted him -Ludwig- to the man, along with his other qualities. Optimistic, loving, artistic- everything. Even some of his negative qualities proved to be appealing, somehow. After all, Feliciano wouldn’t be Feliciano if he didn’t know how to fear, didn’t know how to flirt and didn’t know how to cry.

That was the reason why he feared the man. You thought that Ludwig didn’t know fear? Ah, you’ve been misled. He certainly knew how to fear, and this was one of the times that he felt it.

He felt something- something strong for Feliciano. He knew it from the moment that the Valentine’s misunderstanding happened, when he mistook the roses to have that other meaning: love for lovers.

He felt flustered when he received those roses -he could still remember it clearly-, his analytical thoughts crashing down on him when the other man uttered, “It means what it means?” He knew that he should have thought of the alternate meaning of it all, but he didn’t because he was in love and he didn’t understand how exactly it happened to him.

Despite the fact that it was all a misunderstanding and that they continued on with their normal lives -as normal as it could get, anyway- after that incident, somehow, he still got his happy ending.

Because the Valentine’s Day that followed after that embarrassing one wasn’t a misunderstanding. Feliciano Vargas actually gave him red roses knowing what they implied, a cheerful smile on his face as he whispered “Happy Valentine’s Day, Ludwig” into his ear and kissing him -actually kissing him- gently, afterwards pulling away as he said “Ti amo” with the most affectionate face he could muster and it felt like butterflies were in his stomach and he pretty much felt like he had a fever with all the blood rising up to his head.

The Italian merely laughed at that, poking his nose with his index finger as he hummed, “You’re adorable when you blush, Ludwig.” He really couldn’t contradict that statement for fear of saying something idiotic and incoherent because of all the unbelievable glee he was feeling inside. Thankfully, his brain didn’t short-circuit that time. Er, well, maybe it did. Just a bit, though.

“Buongiorno.”

He almost jumped in surprise at the sleepy voice that greeted him, though he quickly brought his self back together as he greeted his lover back with a kiss to the forehead and a “Guten Morgen.” He received soft laughter in response, lithe arms encircling his shoulders as they shared a brief kiss. He smiled warmly at that, pulling away just a bit to ask, “I trust that you slept well?”

Feliciano nodded in response, nuzzling his forehead into the taller man’s shoulder as he chirped happily, “I did! Sleeping with Ludwig is really nice.” Laughter escaped his lips again when he noticed the blonde man’s blush, pressing a kiss to his neck as he said, “Mm, so naughty.”

“Er,” Ludwig cleared his throat, “I apologize. Your wording of it is truly...um. Odd.” He coughed again to emphasize this, earning another heartfelt laugh from the brunet that leaned on him.

“Mm, ti amo, Ludwig.”

Another affectionate -and slightly embarrassed- smile. “Ich liebe dich auch, Feliciano.”

It was only a matter of time until he had his happily ever after, anyway.
