A surprizingly engaging book on a subject I know nothing about :

Samplers - Rebecca Scott

“When one mentions the ‘sampler’ man of us conjure images of young girls meticulously working rows of cross-stitch alphabets and numerals…”

While clearly not for everyone, Rebecca Scott’s Samplers is a beautifully illustrated examination of these works as amazing pieces of craft, lovely primitive art, and an important part of women’s history.

I knew little about samplers before reading this book (I utterly lack the crafting gene), but many of my friends made them as girls and tell me that the images in this volume bring back many memories, and that they are aware of the intricacy possible in such work. One almost unbelievable example from the book is a ‘written’ history of Britain, from the time of Harold Hadraada to the then present 19th century, made by a girl who was probably eight-years-old at the time.

Unlike many other Shire titles Samplers has a good amount of information on its subject in the United States, making it more useful for those who want a more complete overview. Even for the uninitiated this is a fine introduction to a form of art beginning to have the appreciation it is due.
