The ticking is from the Countdown Clock, that in turn is hooked-up to a device that will destroy all other worlds if the Clock is stopped.

Far better and less drastic method of 'stopping' the sound would be to find yourself some company.

Such an wonderful weapon, now that I know what it is, I won't stop it. To snuff out the life of all worlds at once, now that is a beautiful thing.
