Hamlet: 25 to Life

Feb 24, 2010 18:29

My Theatre for Social Change class listened to a This American Life episode that focused entirely on a production of Shakespeare's Hamlet in a maximum security prison, with all the actors being actual murderers and criminals.

It was SO fascinating. And kind of beautiful. Put a whole new spin on Hamlet, with an entirely new set of interpretations regarding intercharacter relationships, Hamlet's motivations, and the hesitation he faces when thinking about if he should or shouldn't kill someone.

We didn't get to finish it, but while we listened I started sketching, and ended up with a compilation from some of the descriptions from the inmates, and a Hamlet from a production of Rosencrantz&Guildenstern Are Dead.

Warnings: PG-13 for a little bit of crazy psychopathic murdering...
Notes: Format fixed! :)
And that thing in his hand is supposed to be a plastic-wrapped dead body, but that's difficult to draw in the dark.

SHAKESPEARE. *is a ginormous dork*

ETA: Ooh! I found it online! This American Life: Act V! Listen, it's amazing.
