Random Hotch ramblings

Mar 16, 2006 16:44

... And now for another couple of random questions. I blame the fact that we didn't have a new CM episode this week, so I was forced to re-watch my tape of "The Tribe." And, while the ep has some great Hotch background exposition, it raises several interesting questions about the Hotchner family.

Work-avoidance ramblings about Hotch's age and childhood. Mild spoilers for LDSK, Natural Born Killer, Poison, and The Tribe )

Nothing to add... but you have definitely got an interesting points. I just automatically assumed it was his father that abused him, but didn't think of it when I saw "The Tribe". I need to start paying more attention. :)

I think, concerning the abusive father bit, that the CM people were playing with the idea in Natural Born Killer and perhaps now decided against it. That sounds rather odd but I'm not sure abused-Hotch is such a great idea. It would really depend on what type, how much and how long.

I love this brother sideplot. I hope he comes in more than just once.

I hope so too. Sean's introduction was an interesting twist, and I hope we see more of him. Actually, though, when he stepped off the elevator I assumed he was Gideon's son, and I hope we get to meet Stephen sometime too. There's been so much allusion to him, I think they'd have to introduce him sometime.

I also hope they're not changing their mind mid-season about Hotch's background, although it's certainly possible. I just hope the story's consistent, whatever it winds up being -- otherwise it's just too confusing. I have a hard enough time keeping up with the details as it is.

well what if in natural born killer he was talking about someone else in the agency with the abuse thing like reid or morgan maybe it was them who were abused and hotch was giving a example

Good point. Also a possibility. I'm hoping they step up the character exposition on all of them, actually, because they're all such interesting people and yet we don't really know all that much about them yet.

God, I was really (sort of-)hoping (in a twisted way) for an abused!Hotch... We're not as far along as "The Tribe" over here, but...

Agreeing with you! Abused!Hotch would be a good reason why he grew up so fast and acts older than his age.

Earlier on in 'Natural Born Killer', after Vincent beats up Hotch... Gideon is at Hotch, all concerned and Hotch is telling him that's it's fine. This could be an indication that Hotch is used to getting his ass kicked.

How did Hotch act at the end of 'LDSK'? Usually people who don't want to end up like the people who abused them, become over-sensitive when they think they are doing something similar.

At one point he says that he became a lawyer because his father was one. A lot of people who go into a job because it is what their parent did, do it because they have a overbearing/ dominant parent or because they lost that parent at a young age and so idolize them. The second would be more probable here. Mainly because Hotch and his brother speak of their father affectionately, but giving the impression he is no longer in their lives, and also Hotch tries to be a 'dad' to his little brother- tells him off for wasting his life, wanting him to do the best with his life.

I've always thought it was more likely to be an abusive step parent or alcoholic & abusive mother. (I don't remember him ever mentioning either a step parent or mother- could be too painful to think of one or the other, whichever it was.)

His protectiveness of the team, particularly Reid in LDSK

Woops, posted before I finished.

His protectivness of Reid during LDSK could be because of an abusive chilhood. Reid's dimissal with
"you kick like a 9yr old girl" not only shows that he is used to be abused and can handle the pain- something Hotch didn't question, as if he knew what it felt like) but also that Hotch was scared of hurting someone he cared about.

Okay, enough ranting from me.
