Listing the Triggers in Criminal Minds

Nov 26, 2011 02:10

"Into the Woods" is on my TV right now, and I looked it up on the CM wiki, and decided to skip it the way I skipped "P911", and wish I had skipped "Hope". I know there are probably some people who skipped the pyro episodes even if they didn't the others, because the result of burns are their last straws, everyone have different ones, let's make a list?

Obviously this would be spoilery, my idea is, you put in your comment, the title of the triggering thing, and then you put in < font color= "white" > but minus the space < / font> the episode names.

I'll start:
ETA: in major progress

With the sexual abuse of children, well, "What Fresh Hell" was a scary episode, but my take away from that was that the girl was rescued and returned to her life, it is something that would haunt her nightmares for years to come, but she can recover, compared to those who were murdered afterwards, and those where the period of captivity was longer, Peter in "P911" was raised to believe his abuser was his father, of the two, Billie will recover better. This is why I didn't just lump it in with sex crimes. I could rewatch "What Fresh Hell" because what I remembered when it ended was the girl smiling, safe in Gideon's arms, after she was rescued. I skipped to the last 5 minutes of P911 so I could watch Team BAU kicking ass, and I saw a frightened kid screaming for his 'daddy' even though that was the creepy pedo in question who kidnapped him and kept him locked up.

Sexual slavery of /adults/ also gets its own category because confinement complicates recovery, a victim who was not only sexually assaulted but held prisoner would literally miss out on his/her life, jobs, schools, friends and family wondering what happened. Confinement would also prevent the victim from seeking medical treatment on injuries, where, if they are fertile, to prevent pregnancy with Plan B, and to take anti-viral drugs to reduce the risk of STDs latching on.

Brief PSA Time for victims in a position to seek help: I hope this never happens to any of you, any of us, but if it did, if you are that 1 in 4 woman, even if you don't want to file a report, and it's your right, please please go to the hospital for the meds, the sooner you get it, the more effective it is in preventing pregnancy and STD. And if you are that one in ten victims who is a man, you still need to go for the anti-viral meds. And if condoms were used, a)improper use would often protect the penetrator but not the penetrated, and b) bacteria infection is a complication of tearing. So hospital, ASAP, worry about the rest later. After that, Anonymously, there are rape survivors groups you can join online, and depending on your geographic location, crisis hotlines.

a list of some triggers, aiming not to so much list everything in which the topic was covered, but where it was depicted in a way likely to trigger (so the interview the killers episode "Riding the Lighting was not listed under sexual assault, even though it's what the unsubs did, nothing was shown on screen (unless I somehow missed a scene because I saw it on TV, if so, please point it out), the episode was about interview with the unsubs from the BAU POV. On the other hand, incidence of Rape Culture, where someone is being dismissive of the victim, is listed under Sexual Assault triggers, because it is very likely something a rape victim has experienced and hearing someone say the same words that was said to them in the aftermath can be very triggering:
!!!!Spoilers!!!!By highlighting what's after the trigger name, there will be the episode name, what's triggering about it, and sometimes the ending if it's relevant

Harmful to Minors:
Sex crimes against children: "What Fresh Hell", 202 "P911", "Profiler Profile" (abuse by a mentor figure),"Seven Seconds", 421 "A Shade of Gray", "Uncanny Valley", "Into the Woods" (serial confinement and murders), "Hope" (confinement and murder)

Graphic depiction of child abuse: 214 "The Big Game" (flashbacks to the unsub's childhood), 215 "Revelations" (flashbacks to the unsub's childhood), 706 "Epilogue" (the way the unsub's father hits him was very very flinch inducing, and I find this scarier than 214's religious crazy father because the type of abusive fathers in this episode are probably more common?)

Prolonged imprisonment and sexual abuse of children: 202 "P911", "Into the Woods" (serial confinement and murders), 421 "A Shade of Gray (kidnapped from home, 2 days, murder), "Hope" (confinement and murder)

Family Betrayal: 304 "Seven Seconds"(molested by uncle, further victimization by aunt)

Sexual Assault

Graphic Sexualized Violence (unsub POV, camera focus on the near nude victim's body): 603 "Remembrance of Things Past" (the targeted demographic of this episode seem to be Aged Serial Killers: unsub's POV focusing the near nude bodies of young women who are tied down and terrified, the victims are numerous, their portrayals near identical, and basically serve as fodder), 702 "Proof" (unsub POV, camera focus on the body of the young women who are tied down and terrified, acid shown being poured into their eyes or mouth)

Rape Culture (Dismissal of the victims by the authority or those they trust): 205 "Aftermath" (victim is told that she's lucky because her injuries are minor), "Middle Man"(pig cop ranted about how strippers were asking for it), "Jones" (pig cop bullied a victim into dropping her charges because one of her rapists was his buddy.)

Revictimization (threat to recovery: where the victim is targeted again, be it assault on their person, loved ones, or where they are contacted): 119 "Machismo" (mothers of rape victims are murdered)

Kidnapping and Sexual Assault: 101 "Extreme Aggressor" (woman seen chained by her neck in a cage, but I think the uplift>trigger since she fought back and was rescued), 105 "Broken Mirror", 203 "The Perfect Storm" (cabin in the woods, videotape).

Home Invasion and Sexual Assault: 104 "Plain Sight" (victim is briefly seen tied on the bed) , 205 "Aftermath"(victim is briefly seen tied on the bed)

Rape which robbed the victims of their First Times (excluding victims who are children because that's listed separately): 205 "Aftermath"(the Catholic college students)

Pregnancy as a result of rape / Forced Birth: "2.5 Aftermath"(the Catholic college student), 5.5 "Cradle to Grave", 7.1 "It Takes A Village" (the probable reason for Chloe's crazy

Sexual Slavery (of adults): "Supply and Demand" (forced prostitution), 520"A Thousand Words" (Young women are kidnapped and held prison for 1 year by a sex offender...victim was shown with a chain around her neck, but she was fully clothed and defiant, and the episode ended on a healing hopeful note)

Kidnapped by A Psycho (excluding sexual components, and ones in which the plight of the victim is predominantly featured): 108 "Natural Born Killer" (victim seen tied to a chair and tortured), 222 "Legacy" (house of horror traps)

Home Invasion and Murder (excluding sexual assault): 107 "The Fox" (whole family),

Home Invasion and Attempted Murder:

Dismemberment: 213 "No Way Out" (camera focus on pieces found...plus view of torture room)

(I only watched all of the first two seasons (-P911) plus a few handfuls of episodes, and the following list of crazy unsubs is long...)
Mental Illness (where someone has completely lost it): 109 "Derailed" (paranoid schizophrenic is hallucinating, 111 "Blood Hungry", 211 "Sex, Birth, Death" (sexual sadist is afraid he'll act on it), 214 "The Big Game" (Multiple Personality Disorder), 215 "Revelations" (MPD, plus Spencer's memory of a mentally ill parent's schizophrenia), 217 "Distress" (PTSD dissociation), 512 "The Uncanny Valley (the unsub's mental state will make you cry, 619 "With Friends Like These" (awake with imaginary friends that tells you to kill), 704 "Dorado Falls" (familiar faces are now read as enemies), 707 "There's No Place Like Home" (the path to the unsub's mental break down is so outlandish, I don't think it's going to trigger anyone this way.)

Mental Health (struggles with mental health: nervous break down and depressions, phobias, etc): 1.1 "Extreme Aggressor" (Gideon's visible No One Is Home stare)), 301 "Doubt" (Not going to argue whether or not Gideon was THINKING about suicide, but it looked like it and that's why it's a suicide trigger), 303 "Scared to Death" (phobias), 505 "From Childhood's Hours" (Combo platter of struggling with suicidal depression and responsibility for a child, the plight of the poor lady AND her poor kid has reaffirmed OP's determination to get her tubes tied even though she has long driven past That Place and has hosed the dust off

Addictions: 215 "Revelations", 216 "Fear and Loathing", 217 "Distress", 216 "Jones" (Reid and Ethan talking about their addictions...so it's actually not as bad as when Reid was hiding it and yet visibly struggling with it.

Animal Attacks: 214 "Big Game" (woman is eaten alive by dogs, it happened off screen, but then the dogs look at JJ funny at the end...)

Bullying: Elephant's Memory

Burning to death: 1.2 "Compulsion", 2.1 "The Fisher King: Part 2" (Fisher King is visibly burned and eventually perish in another fire), "Ashes and Dust", 516 "Mosley Lane", "In Remembrance of Things Past"(Electrically burned beyond recognition)
