By the way, if you guys haven't done it already, I think the readership is primed for a piece on what (and how much of it) people should bring with them on even a casual a trip to the mountains. I know I have yet to see that story done even with all this media coverage of the issue. Obviously this highlights the need to bring extra food and water, but what other things could've helped that most of us haven't thought of or don't know about?

It even crossed my mind that when the dust from all this settles, a fund could be set up in James' name to educate people on that subject.

I read somewhere that survival trainers tell trainees that under extreme environmental situations to rely on what is called a "Rule of 3's."

That is one can live:
3 weeks without food
3 days without water
3 hours without shelter
