Daein -- Daein flooded their own land to slow us down? How could they even think about doing something like that?!

[[6% spent -- 3% on Chapter 18, but he doesn't find it worth mentioning right now, and 3% on Chapter 20. 76% total; 2% remaining.]]

[For a nation to flood its own land like that -- what were the mercenaries doing?]

. . . Sir Ike.

If it isn't much trouble, I would like to hear the story behind this.

...We were in a war. At the time, we were marching through the kingdom of Daein. We made our way into a region called Talrega, and...

The enemy ahead of us...they opened the floodgates to the river nearby. It was to try to stall us.

But there was a village there, along with lots of farmland. The water ruined both the village and the land. The Daein army sacrificed the lives of their own people to stop our advance.

Why must the people suffer at the expense of gaining an edge in battle? What they would have to endure . . . I can't fathom how painful it would be.

I hope that such a tactic wasn't imposed so regularly. Regardless of the reason for this war, Daein's people should not have to pay for what its soldiers did.

It wasn't. I can tell you that. I've remembered most of the time we've spent in Daein now, and that was the only time the people of Daein got wrapped up in it.

I see; I'm . . . very pleased to hear that.

Yeah.

The sooner this war ends, the better.

I'd think so as well.

However, I confess that I'm quite baffled. You told me that I hired you and your mercenaries, and that I am a princess. We were marching through a kingdom that we are in war with. Daein's citizens have become involved in the process. Due to my lack of any memories, I neither remember nor understand the circumstances under which this war erupted.

Why were we fighting, Sir Ike? . . . Shall I wait until those memories return to me?

...No. I should tell you now. That way, when you do remember what happened, it'll be less of a shock.

We're at war because Daein invaded Crimea. You were the only member of the royal family who survived the siege of the capital. I found you unconscious and brought you back to the fort, where Father agreed to help you.

Daein invaded Crimea -- my homeland? And I was the only surviving member. I am alone? . . . No, I . . . [It's far more than she expected, and the thought of loneliness is too much. Suppressing it is rather difficult.]

Oh . . .

No. You are not alone. My father took the job, and my company's been with you ever since.

Sir Ike . . . Yes. You're right. You told me as much when I first arrived, that I was with you and your mercenaries. How could I selfishly claim that I was alone? . . . I have been with you prior to Memento Eden, after all, and even now you have already aided me once.

Yeah. As long as my contract with you exists, you will always have me fighting for you. And even after that contract ends, you can always call on me for help.

I cannot thank you enough for your kindness. Thank you . . . I hope that I will be able to return the favor some day.
