Well, first, refresh my memory -- did I ever tell you about the medallion?

You mean Lehran's Medallion?

Okay, so you know. Good. That saves me some time.

Now, there was another heron that survived the massacre. Her name was Lillia, and she was kidnapped and brought to Daein during that whole thing. While she was stuck there, Ashnard tried to get her to break the seal on the medallion. She couldn't, but that isn't the point.

The point is that he wants to release the dark god sealed in the medallion.

Damn him. For all the suffering Ashnard has brought upon my laguz brothers, it's a tragedy he can only be killed once for all of them.

Actually, that's a pretty important point. Lillia couldn't break the seal on the medallion because that can only be done by a descendent of Altina. Altina, as in Begnion's first empress.

Wait, what? Altina was Begnion's first empress?

Supposedly. Have your heard her name in another context?

Only what Prince Reyson told me -- that a girl named Altina was the only one who could sing the galdr of release and have any effect. But if she was the first empress of Begnion, that means she died well before any of us were born... So then that can't be done, now, right?

It can be, because Altina's descendants can also do it.

I know, because I saw it happen.

No. Wait. It's about the future, isn't it? If so, don't tell me.

Yeah, probably. You did look a little bigger in the memory.

That's fine, then. I'll keep my mouth shut.

Anyway, Ashnard doesn't know that. So instead he tried to use the other method of breaking the seal: turning the entire continent into a battleground.

That makes sense. The old lizard king Dheginsea preached on and on about we all had to avoid a continent-wide war.

Funny, though, that Ashnard would know so much about the medallion. How'd you think he learned about it?

I don't know. He was a member of the royal family, so maybe he found information on it in the royal library or something.

From what I've heard about Ashnard, can you imagine him pouring over books in a library somewhere?

It all seems a little too convenient for me, but I guess I could just be paranoid.
