It is done. The beast's mother is dead. I lost my sword in the effort, though. It seems that mundane swords could not harm the demon, and it broke during the fight. There were other weapons, though, and I took another sword -- one supposedly incapable of being wielded by a man -- and used it to slay her. But her blood melted it.
Even so, I'm not unarmed. As gratitude, King Hrothgar gave me the royal family heirloom -- the sword Naegling. I tried to tell him such a gesture wasn't necessary, but he insisted.
I have to say, this sword is amazingly crafted. Never have I seen a sword so expertly made. Worry not, King Hrothgar -- I will put this sword to good use.
