On Bridges / Про мосты
Petersburgians have their own popular belief. It consists of two parts. First, America is, let's put it this way, not very remarkable for its architecture. Second, Petersburg is a very beautiful city. And part of its beauty are its drawbridges.
У петербуржцев есть своё собственное популярное клише. Состоит оно из двух частей: во-первых, Америка это такая страна, которая, так скажем, не особо выделяется архитектурой; во-вторых, Петербург это очень красивый город. И все немедленно вспоминают питерские разводные мосты.
A petersburgian could speak of the bridges with love and for long time. And of how unique is this landmark. Питерец может долго и красиво рассказывать про мосты и про то, какая это уникальная местная достопримечательность.
No, you probably won't be told, that these are the only drwabridges in the world. This topic would rather be politely avoided. And the story of uniquiety of the city would continue. ;) Нет, вам не скажут, что других таких мостов в природе не бывает. Эту тему, скорее, деликатно обойдут. И продолжат рассказывать про уникальность города. ;)
What I'm trying to say is that USA also has this beauty. In at least two cities. One of them is Fort Lauderdale. Does it not remind you of Peterburg? ;) But unlike in Russia, there's no police near the bridges. Come, look. В общем, в Америке такая красота тоже есть. Как минимум, в двух городах. Форт Лодердейл один из них. Правда, похоже на Питер? Только у мостов не стоит милиция, от моторов не гоняют подходи, смотри.
You could even stay on the bridge while it is being separated (what's the English word for it?). Not on the moving parts, of course, but really close to them, yes. Хоть стой на мосту, пока его разводят (на разводные секции, конечно, не пускают, но вплотную запросто).

By the way, when we were taking a tour along the channels (does it not remind you of the favourite tourist activity of Peter?), my colleagues suddenly got excited and started saying: "Look at that yacht, what do you think, does it cost more than this house? Yes, probably it does..." Кстати, когда мы катались по каналам (знакомое занятие для туристов, да?), меня вдруг начали пихать под бок коллеги и говорить: "Посмотри, какая яхта, как ты думаешь, она дороже этого дома? Наверное, дороже..."
