Nearly A Month In Freiburg!!! AHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!! That's simply nutty...

Hey folks! How's life in the States? I certainly miss it, but I'm having fun in the Fatherland ;-) My Sprachkurs (language course) came to an end on Friday, so it's a wee bit sad because a lot of my new friends went home to their countries to finish studying. It was a lot of fun while it lasted though. Thursday night was the end of the Sprachkurs party which ended up being a wild disco in the StuSie bar. So many international drunks and lots of loud, fast music to dance to! Can you imagine?! Needless to say, I didn't get home until 2 and boy, was I tired the next day! I can only imagine how bad it was for the people who were drunk! Luckily, our teacher decided to push class back an hour and fifteen minutes and to take us out to breakfast instead of trying to teach us anything.

Last night, I went to go see 'Resident Evil: Apocalypse' with my friend Katharine, so that was an experience! It was kinda weird in German, but I liked the movie. There is another movie here I want to see called 'Der Untergang' about the last hours of the Nazi leaders' lives in the bunker before the Russians came. It's been receiving criticism because people say they made Hitler too much of a sympathetic character, but my friends have said it was a good and interesting film to see, though very difficult to watch. On a lighter note, 'Dodgeball' has been given the German title 'Voll auf die Nüsse' or 'Right in the Nuts!!!' How marvelous is that?! The Germans can be so strange sometimes...

Today, Emilie and I went to 9:30 Mass at St. Martins, a really pretty church near the Rathaus (city hall), in order to hear the choir (The German-French Choir of Freiburg) we want to join perform. We sang with them on Monday night and we had a blast. They sound really awesome! It's a mixed choir of people of all different ages and so we got to talk to actual Germans for the first time! There is a concert in February and before that, a mandatory rehearsal in France - what a good excuse to travel. The only thing I'm nervous about is that there a small audition I have to do in order to get into the choir. I've heard it's not bad, but still, I hope I make it.

This week, I hope to make some exciting excursions to Wal-mart and Ikea in order to find a small carpet and some other stuff for my room to make it more homey feeling. I also want to take some day trips to Schauinsland and Titisee (yes, it's said just like it looks!) which are apparently very pretty. I want to try to get some people together to go on day hikes too - they're free and as long as the weather is good, I think we'll have a blast! I found a camera recharger for around 10 bucks, so I think I'll be putting more photos online soon. That's always exciting.

Well, I have laundry to do this afternoon and I think then I'm just going to hang out and read. I have also been experimenting with cooking, so that's always exciting! Tonight I think I'll make wursts with sauerkraut, perhaps served with bread and brie. Tasty, eh?! If you know where to go, food can be really cheap here. For example, the hunk of brie I got was under a $1!

Overall, I think I'm settling in and beginning to enjoy my time here. I only wish that you all could be with me. I can deal with being in a different place with a different culture, but it is impossible to replace the friends I have back home. It's weird because it seems like everyone here has to go out or get drunk to have fun. That's totally not my scene - at least not every night. I miss just hanging out at peoples' houses or at school and watching tv or movies. I don't have a tv here, so I miss being able to flick it on and be mindless for a while! My floormates and I may buy one, but like everything else, you have to pay through the nose and you're charged for having one in your house. It's ridiculous! I cannot believe how expensive things are here. I won't take things for granted when I get home, that's for sure!

Well, I'm off to do laundry - till next week!

Annabelle :-)
