Brendon was a good kid; it’d never even crossed his mind that he might be left alone in Vegas while his mother and her boyfriend moved to their new house.

“I’m sorry Brendon, but there are no day schools where we’re moving to, so we thought you might as well stay in Vegas,” his mother explained tiredly, while Brendon continued to glare at her.

“It’s not fair, why do you have to move?” he whined, turning round slightly to glare at his mom’s boyfriend.

“I’ve already told you, we need the space, we’re hoping to start a family,” Andrew, Brendon’s mom’s boyfriend sighed.

“You have a family! What about me?” Brendon asked sadly, staring over at the neatly packed boxes.

“You hate the cold, you’ll hate Colorado,” his mother pointed out, smoothing down her dress.

“Fine, go, leave me here by myself, have a nice life,” Brendon huffed.

“You won’t be by yourself; you’ll be going to boarding school,” Andrew said, and Brendon was sure he saw a smirk flash across the man’s face.

“What the-” Brendon started, but was cut off by his mother.

“Don’t you dare swear, Brendon! You’re going and that’s that.”

Brendon’s jaw dropped, “but... you can’t...”

“Yes, we can, and that’s where you’re going,” Andrew grinned, handing Brendon a leaflet which depicted a large brick building which seemed to be situated in the middle of the Nevada desert.

“This is in the middle of nowhere!” Brendon protested, “I thought you said I could stay in Vegas?!”

“It is in Vegas, well, pretty near it anyway, it’s about ten miles away,” Andrew said blankly, but it was obvious he was holding back a smile.

“Fuck my life,” Brendon muttered, stomping upstairs.

“Language, Brendon!” his mother screeched.

“Whatever, I need to pack, leave me alone,” he grumbled back.

“There’s no need, we packed up all your stuff and had it sent there already,” Andrew said nonchalantly.

“So when am I going?” Brendon asked, coming back down the stairs.

“Tomorrow,” both his mother and Andrew said in unison.

“Perfect,” the boy growled, stomping out of the house so he could go tell his girlfriend the bad news.

---

Brendon found himself walking very slowly to Davina’s house - to be honest; he was pretty scared of the girl.

When he did eventually arrive, she opened the door looking more than a little pissed off.

“Brendon,” she stated irritably in some sort of acknowledgement.

“Yeah?” he answered stupidly, giving her an awkward smile.

“Your mom called, she said you’ve decided that you’re staying in Vegas,” she deadpanned, gesturing for him to come inside.

“Yeah, but I’ve got to go to boarding school,” he mumbled sheepishly.

“I heard... what’s going to happen with us?” she asked, sitting down and crossing her ankles carefully.

“Well, I doubt we’re going to be able to see each other much, visitors are only allowed to visit at the end of the semester,” Brendon said sadly.

“We could try though, couldn’t we? See what happens,” the girl offered, desperation filling her voice.

“We could, I guess,” Brendon agreed, only because he didn’t want to see her cry.

“Good, I’ll see you in a few months then,” she whispered miserably, getting up to place a soft kiss on the boy’s cheek, “good luck babe.”

“Vi,” Brendon murmured in to the girl’s hair.

“Yeah?” she answered, smiling softly.

“Thank you,” Brendon breathed, pulling away from her and heading for the door.

“Where are you going?” she asked curiously.

“I’ve got to get some sleep; I’m leaving early tomorrow morning.”

“Oh... I’ll miss you, Bren,” Davina said, smiling sadly.

“Mm, I’ll see you soon,” he responded, leaving and closing the door behind him.

“I’ll see you soon,” she echoed, falling back on to the chair.

---

The next morning, Brendon’s alarm went off at 8am.

“What the fuck man, it’s too damn early!” he yelled to himself.

“Brendon, what did I say about your language?” his mother reminded him, as she came in his room carrying a tray of breakfast.

“What did I say about coming in my room without knocking?” Brendon retorted, taking hold of the tray and placing it in front of him.

“Now eat it all, you have a long day ahead of you,” his mother nagged, leaving the room.

“I bet I do,” Brendon mumbled miserably, digging his fork in to a veggie sausage.

---

A few hours later, Brendon found himself in the back of Andrew’s car, listening to his iPod and drumming on the seat angrily.

“How long until we get there?” he growled, staring out of the window.

“Not long... if I wasn’t any wiser, I’d think you’re happy to get rid of me,” Andrew said sarcastically.

“How come you’re only a bitch when my mom isn’t around?” Brendon spat, turning up the volume on his iPod.

Andrew said something, but Brendon gave up on listening.
