Mr. Robot + Secrets and Lies

Two mildly interesting TV things.

I don't get a lot of face-time with an actual TV screen these days. I also no longer have Netflix so I checked out the offerings on Hulu Plus and some of the other TV apps on my phone and discovered Secrets and Lies and Mr Robot.

Mr Robot is something I'd been meaning to check out ever since I'd seen a preview a while back, but I forgot it existed and therefore have missed all the episodes so far. But luckily for me they have all the way back to the pilot on the USA app and I was able to watch the first episode (and part of the second) the other night. LOVED IT. I can't wait to dive deeper into this one, but am obviously way behind so no spoilers please!

I hate to admit it, since it's clearly supposed to make him abnormal, but I was so on board with some of Elliot's thoughts on our modern world. Why don't you have a facebook? - Because I hate facebook. Haha. Finally, some representation for the facebook-less folks out there. ;)

The other show, Secrets and Lies did cross my radar a bit when it was on last season, but I never got a chance to check it out. I heard it was a self-contained season with a single mystery, which appeals to me, and so when I saw Hulu Plus had the entire first season I thought I would give it a go. Finished it a couple of days ago and really enjoyed it.

No plot spoilers, I promise... There were some really great moments throughout and the standout for me was the relationship between Ben and Dave. I absolutely loved their dynamic. That last scene with the two of them and Natalie got me right in the feels. Yes, I openly cried.

A couple not-so-good things: I do feel like they kind of screwed up with the Jess character. Despite having an actual canon reason she would behave that way, it just didn't work for me. Plus, and I totally get that it's right in the title and that's the point of the show, but all of the secrets and lies exposed were a bit over the top at times. Still, it was entertaining and completely addictive, so I would definitely recommend it. It's only ten episodes and can totally be gobbled up in about a week or so if you're interested in a fun mystery. I mean, not Harper's Island level fun. But still... fun.

tv: mr robot, tv: secrets and lies, tv: harper's island
