notes: yeah, i'm not even sure what this is.

He drives her home late from the office one Friday night.

Lizzie's working on this editing project, surprisingly not at all related to the vlogs, and after a while she realizes the only office light on her floor that's still turned on is hers.

"Crap." She checks her watch even as she's closing the macbook lid and reaching underneath the desk for her bag, certain that she's already missed the bus back to the house. "Crap," she says again.

Darcy's in the front lobby when she gets out of the elevator, just him and the security guard at the front desk.

"Miss Bennet," the guard nods in her direction, one hand up in a half-wave.

"Joe," she says, acknowledging him with a nod. And the fact that the night security guard recognizes her would almost be embarrassing to her except that Darcy is on his cell phone leaning against the desk, and he's laughing, and when he's laughing that means he's smiling and well... that's not a bad thing at all from where Lizzie's standing.

And so she stands there, for god knows how long, just staring at his profile before he hangs up and turns to face her.

"Elizabeth," he says.

Well, she thinks. I've definitely missed the bus now.

-

She sits in the passenger seat and stares at the road ahead and makes small talk for the first half of the ride. It's not that she doesn't notice (or appreciate) the way Darcy smells, or the way his hand had lingered at the small of her back when he helped her into the car, or the way he looks in his glasses and scarf, or the fact that he held the door for her as they left the building, or the way he had said her name, there in the lobby.

In fact, it's exactly because she noticed (and appreciated) all of these things that she's currently talking a mile a minute.

Darcy casts a sideways glace at her before focusing back on the road, and she detects amusement. And even maybe a hint of a smile.

Even maybe.

I need to call Jane, she suddenly thinks. Because ever since that weekend with Gigi and Darcy there's been this thing bubbling in her stomach, and until this very moment she hadn't exactly realized what it was.

Lizzie laughs out loud.

"Something funny?"

She puts a hand over her mouth. Squeaks out a quick, "Nothing! Nothing."

Darcy gives her that look again and then he reaches out, turns the volume up on the radio.

"I love this song," he says. "Don't you?"

Now, Lizzie can't remember if it was The Arcade Fire, or Bon Iver, or some indie band that she's never heard of, but she remembers nodding when he says it.

"Me too," she tells him, moving her head in time with the music.

-

Unsurprisingly, Darcy insists on walking her to the front door.

"Nice place," he tells her when she's digging in her purse for her keys. "Are your friends coming back into town anytime soon?"

Lizzie looks up at the house, wonders how many thousands of square feet smaller it is than Darcy's house must be. "No," she says, twists the key in the lock. "They won't be back anytime soon."

"Ah, I see," he says.

And then, almost involuntarily, she blurts, "Do you wanna come in?"

This time, when Darcy looks at her, she's pretty sure she's blushing.

And she swears, she swears, that he stammers when he answers, "I - I'd love to."

Lizzie reaches out, takes his hand. "Come on."
