He wonders what it was that made everyone leave this place. He doesn’t ask the question out loud. To her, this isn’t about the abandonment, it’s about the beauty that existed before.
She makes up lives as she walks in and out of houses, stores, diners. She knows where all the cool kids would’ve hung out. She knows where she would’ve hung out. It’s not the same place, but she seems pleased with that.
She goes into bedrooms and talks about the passions of imaginary people. She goes into kitchens and talks about domesticity. Jack wonders if she’s telling him about the life she wants, or if her own version would be different again. She seems to enjoy life off the beaten path.
In the final house, she uses her finger to write her name in the dust that lays heavy over a kitchen counter. He’s not sure whether she’s claiming it or simply bearing witness.
Outside, the sun beats down and the world still turns. They climb back into their car and she leans over, kissing his cheek, soft lips catching on stubble. She smiles, a smile that lets him know she feels alive, and then they pull out onto the highway, wind in their hair once more.
