A church group from Topeka, Kansas, came out with pickets to the Lincoln memorial service of Army First Lieutenant Garrison Avery on Saturday.
But a motorcycle group called The Patriot Guard Riders was on hand to shield those attending the memorial service from the picketers from Topeka's Westboro Baptist Church.
The Westboro Church members picket funerals and memorial services for fallen soldiers, contending that American troops are being killed in Iraq as vengeance from God because the United States abides homosexuals.
Avery was buried at the US Military Academy at West Point, New York. He and two other soldiers were killed in Baghdad by a roadside bomb on February first.
My dad is a member of The Patriot Guard Riders. He was there today. Maybe he's making some progress toward not being such a jackass.
