I'm getting back onto the exercise horse. It's not just because I'm fighting my age and not wanting to buy a whole new range of pants sizes (yes, I admit that I worry about that). One, I miss running, and two, exercise is good for you. I read that last one on the IntarWeb somewhere. Probably Fark, or Wikipedia.
Anyway, I've been running consistently (and sometimes poorly) since last Wednesday. The current heat wave across the country pushing temps into the triple digits certainly doesn't help, and piling on buckets of humidity does wonders as well. Still, I want to get my legs in motion and in shape again to chase that ever elusive goal of running a marathon.
So you can imagine my dismay when, just 1/2 mile into a 3 mile run yesterday, I step on the side of my right foot and my ankle bends in. Holy cow did it ever hurt. I limped along as I let out a few expletives about bears and squirrels, finally gathering the courage to try and run again. That didn't last long. So I walked back home (I'm currently running in the neighborhood), got ready for work, popped some Aleve, and went on to the Salt Mine. Then the ankle started to stiffen.
Thankfully, the pain and minor swelling subsided by the evening, but don't think I didn't flashback to when I sprained that very same ankle 5 (or 6?) years ago. When it grew to the size of a canteloupe and looked like an eggplant. The crutches, the medication, the sheer agony.
Methinks I will try to run some tomorrow, but I'll certainly be watching how I step. Something out there doesn't really want me running... my iPod dies after 10 minutes on a full charge, I twist my ankle... what next, a marauding band of squirrels will attack me with acorns?
