Getting into the outdoors

May 08, 2010 17:51

Pretty awesome day today. Last night, as we were walking home from the writing group, and the sunset was turning Mt Baker pink, Sän pointed to Mt Baker and said, "I'm going there tomorrow!" and I asked, "Can I go, too?" And lo, I did.
We were supposed to go the the Baker River trail, but we got a little lost and ended up exploring this awesome old ruined factory. (Probably an old concrete factory, what with it being in Concrete, Washington. If there's been more geology nerds in the car, we might have explored the quarry. As it is, we drove around it, and I got a good look at the cool folding going on there. Fortunately, other people have visited it for me.

The internet called the ruin Devil's Tower. I called it the Juggalo Palace.

After thoroughly exploring it, we headed up the gravel road, aiming for our trailhead. There was a lot of wrong roads taken, but we got to do some awesome puddle smashing. In one of these puddles lurked a large log, which we bottomed out upon. There was much grinding and scraping and being horrified, but nothing leaked or fell out. Nevertheless, we decided to head back to the main road, and give up on finding our trail.

"I think it's driving different," Stud said.
"Uh...how?" asked me and Sän.
"It's got more power and is more responsive."

So yeah. Stud's car is so crappy, that getting the crap beaten out it MADE IT BETTER.

We tried to go to a state park, but failed to notice that the sign said Left, rather than Right. One big driving loop later, we found Rasar State Park and had lunch. We wandered the riverbank. Hanzo, Sän's puppy, learned the joys of sand, and I picked up pebbles of dunite. The banks were swarming with mating insects.

We got back to the car just in time for the thunderstorm to start. The trip was a wonderful combination of getting lost and amazing luck.
