I just found out a few hours ago that the Georgia Theatre burned today.  Very depressing! I can't imagine an Athens downtown without it.  I saw more movies than concerts there, but each of them was an amazing memory. Requiem for a Dream.  Memento, where the film caught fire,  didn't have sound when repaired, and people in the audience shouted out lines until the sound came back. Hedwig and the Angry Inch with John Cameron Mitchell talking after, refusing to answer any questions he had been asked before, and ending up talking about his first time instead.  There were intermissions during the movies so people could stop by the bar again.

I wish I had gone to more shows there. I always meant to catch a screening of the dark side of oz there, but never got around to it.

If you ever saw John Mayer's video for No Such Thing, you've seen the Georgia Theatre. I know people in that audience. I first watched that video because I recognized friends from my dorm in a clip from it.

I didn't take many pictures walking around Athens, but here's one of the few I have, with the theater in the background during the twilight bike race in 2004.

At least the sign seems to have survived. I hope they rebuild, Athens won't be the same without it.
