Well, although I've watched and appreciated most "classic" musicals of the 40s and 50s - one of the exceptions being Oklahoma, which I loathe - I really don't like that kind of music, so I can't say I'm a fan of them.
However, I have a deplorable weakness for Andrew Lloyd Webber, who seems to have written virtually every other musical created since 1970. (I don't really care for all of his work, but the majority). I think the movie of Jesus Christ Superstar is much underrated, and (as you say) a time capsule.
In all of Les Miz, there's only one song I like - and I don't care for Anne Hathaway's rendition of it. I've never been able to watch all of Moulin Rouge. I like maybe one song in Phantom, which I have seen live - twice. Once because a friend won tickets, and another time because Paul Stanley of KISS was starring in the local production and it was a birthday gift to my best friend, who was a veteran member of the KISS Army.
Whenever I hear the world "Camelot" in the same sentence as "musical", I can only think of a Monty Python bit from The Holy Grail with the knights dancing on the table
The original musical I have only a vague acquaintance with.
