All aboard the rant train! ::train whistle::

Wow.

I certainly didn't expect the kind of response I got to my rant. And what intelligent, well thought out responses, too.

I'll respond to you all, I promise. People who have been with me a while realize I'm a tad... well... lacking in speed and manners about LJ responses. I mean, I do have to actually WORK sometime... and eat... and ( Read more... )

Or maybe at the bookshop while I'm discussing theology with my friends.

Oh, to be a fly on the wall. With popcorn.

What infuriates me most about the idea that "sex is evil and sinful, and so people shouldn't be allowed contraception; they'll just have to suffer the consequences" is the embedded idea that children are a punishment. That itty bitty babies who need vast amounts of care and attention and resources and everything else, little helpless individual people with no say in what happens to them, should be punishment for someone else's mistake.

I mean, do these people also go, "You've murdered someone! You evil person! In response, we'll punish you by making you care for three toddlers for the next five years!"? It makes no sense, and yet that's how they treat children. Punishment for your sins. That's what makes me angry, even more than the idea that I shouldn't have control over my own body.

Oh, that's fucked up beyond words. Children are a punishment unless you have them with your lawfully wedded husband. And then they're a blessing and you should have a multitude of them.

Like Andrea Yates, right?

The thing is, I can at least understand concepts like "sex should only be allowed inside marriage" or "abortion is wrong because it's a baby in there" and so forth. I don't agree with them, but I can more or less see where people are coming from when they believe it. (Growing up in a missionary community is useful, that way.)

But when people start opposing contraception, and abortion, even for people who aren't ready or able to take care of children, that starts making me snarl. Lots. Because once the kid's out in the world, it is a person who deserves some respect, and no one should be someone else's punishment. Especially a kid.

Well, hubby didn't suffer legal retribution for that one, did he? Neither did the male minister. (Although, it delights me that at least some of the population at large were astute enough to make angry murmurings in their directions for encouraging the rampant breeding without mental care.)

OMG. I don't know what part of you - or your rant - to applaud first.

I'll just love you in your entirety and spend the day in hero-worship. Because damn, girl, when you get it right... ::stands in awe::

Hey, so it's NOT just my mother who's used the Jesus argument like that. Hers is "why take the chance, just in case you're wrong? couldn't hurt" or to that effect. (At this point, I'm like "if the afterlife is overcrowded, I'll just go serve on the Dutchman while I wait in line, k?")

There's another aspect you haven't even touched upon. Jesus Camp teaches kids to abstain, right? I don't know if they do this part, but to be nice, I'll assume they teach boys to abstain until marriage, too. Do they teach them to be faithful? Do they teach girls that yes, legally-wed husbands CAN pass disease on to them if they have sex elsewhere? Do they teach these girls how to be aggressive enough within a marriage to demand fidelity and how to spot the signs otherwise? Or does The Dream simply end with "I do"?

Oh, I'll serve the captain of the Dutchman. ON MY KNEES.

The goal is the rings, the dress, the I DO. That's it.

I know. You gotta wonder at the marriages of the old bats who push this. I know I was always amused by the idea of Phyllis Schlafly out running around being all political and giving speeches when SOMEONE must've been sitting at home at the same time with knife and fork in hand, at the table in front of an empty plate, waiting on her to make dinner.

These days, my knees require soft padding. I'd rather serve him on his back.

I'm flexible.

VERY flexy.
