Insound Newsletter: Hot Import Nights

Aug 03, 2005 13:44

If you are even the tiniest bit like me, then you spend a lot of time wondering about obscure imports. Insound has a lot of wonderful international customers, most of them named Sven or Fredderik, and they have ungodly great musical taste. We also get records from a lot of amazing overseas labels. Without these international tipsters, we would never have been able to get you Dungen, The Go Team, The Boy Least Likely To, Art Brut, Hot Chip, and countless others. The thing is, though, no matter how many times we're able to track down these tasty, limited platters, I never am able to figure out who these labels and distributors are. I mean, I've been places. Overseas. And I've never seen a good record store. And I can never find a good live show. And I've only met like one Sven. And I've never seen a record plant in Europe. So I don't know how these Svens are consistently finding the great bands before us, how they get masters made, how they fund the production, and who is buying their records other than Insound trying desperately to get you all some hot import action. I picture underground cities of Fredderik's singing and blogging and reading Sound Collector and using our domestic versions of records as food and energy to power their electricity. And the whole thought is inspiring and awesome and terrifying.
