Woot!
Team FRB Softball squeezed out a 5-4 win last night over our opponent, guaranteeing us the #2 seed for the playoffs. I went 1-4 from the plate, and the one time I did get on the bases, I got caught in a pickle between 3rd and home. I rounded 3rd and was halfway home when I saw the catcher get the ball. I put on the brakes, took two quick strides back toward 3rd and dove head-first, avoiding the swiping tag of the 3rd baseman. I vaguely remember hearing "Out!", at which point I turned my head toward the umpire and yelled "SAFE!!!" in the "I will destroy all who oppose me" voice I can sometimes muster. The ump called me safe and called time-out about a dozen times as I curled up in a ball on the ground around 3rd base. I knocked the wind out of me and needed a minute, but I scored the tying run when the next batter blooped a single over the shortshop. The playoffs start next Wednesday, as we face #7 The Rainmakers, a team we beat in one of our bottom-of-the-last-inning-come-from-behind wins.
Now for something completely different...Rhino is going to release a 7-CD box-set of music from the 90s, called Whatever: The 90s Pop Culture Box. Weren't a good number of people criticizing VH1 just a year or two ago for doing "I Love the 90s" a little too soon? It calls to mind a Ben Folds lyric..."They get nostalgic about the last ten years before the last ten years have passed." Anyhow, I'm more inclined to give Rhino the benefit of the doubt now...we are halfway through the decade-without-name, and the selections on the 7 CD's seem plausible, if not a walk down Napster-memory-lane :) As Pitchfork put it, you could just as easily call it "From Hammer to Moby in 130 Steps". For the heck of it, I'm including the tracklist...off the top of my head, the songs I own (tape/CD/mp3) are in bold...
