Carpet bagger - Northerners who came south after the war to buy southern property at HUGE discounts=>because southerners were often starving Things like this further inflame tensions between regular southerners (non KKK) and the union troop Reconstruction-the name given to the north's attempt to "reshape" southern society between 1865 (the end of the war) and 1877 (when a political deal ended reconstruction…the troops went home) The price for southern support for a candidate in the 1876 election was the removal of northern troops=>Hayes was the candidate 3 constitutional amendments had been passed after the war 14th (freed the slaves) 15th (Made them citizens) and 16th (guarantee them the right to vote) Despite this, after 1877, white southerners dramatically reassert control: A) increased presence of the KKK B) segregation (especially in public schools) C) systematic judicial bias and "framing" of innocent blacks (in the wrong case at the wrong time) Eg lynching The "Jim Crow" System Jim Crow was a character in a popular song "In The Heat Of The Night" (1967) By the 1920s, blacks are leaving the south in large numbers
European New Imperialism (late 19th century) Made possible by the Industrial Power of Europe, which gave them huge advantages in warfare: A) more weapons and better weapons (factory-made) B) greater wealth=>produce goods that have a price advantage in the marketplace Leads to funding universities which leads to medicine, weapons technology, engineering, etc Which gives a huge advantage in warfare As a result, European industrialized countries conquered a huge part of the world in the late 19th century (with Africa and Asia) The largest empire was the British The Belgian Congo was administered so brutally that the other European countries stepped in to force changes How did the Europeans justify this? 1) social Darwinism-the idea that "stronger" societies (ie those that can defeat other societies in war) SHOULD prevail and rule 2) "the White man's burden"-poem written by Kipling The idea that the victorious societies (ie European) could "advance" the societies they conquered…this was their duty There were attempts to obliterate "native" cultures, as a result
What is the argument against these last two beliefs? The victory of the industrialized north in the us civil war over the equally European non-industrialized south shows that, in fact, the only thing was industrialization that lead to victory Europeans didn't pay attention to the american civil war or even pay attention to it, therefore it was a "moot point"

Carpet bagger - Northerners who came south after the war to buy southern property at HUGE discounts=>because southerners were often starving
Things like this further inflame tensions between regular southerners (non KKK) and the union troop
Reconstruction-the name given to the north's attempt to "reshape" southern society between 1865 (the end of the war) and 1877 (when a political deal ended reconstruction…the troops went home)
The price for southern support for a candidate in the 1876 election was the removal of northern troops=>Hayes was the candidate
3 constitutional amendments had been passed after the war
14th (freed the slaves) 15th (Made them citizens) and 16th (guarantee them the right to vote)
Despite this, after 1877, white southerners dramatically reassert control:
A) increased presence of the KKK
B) segregation (especially in public schools)
C) systematic judicial bias and "framing" of innocent blacks (in the wrong case at the wrong time)
Eg lynching
The "Jim Crow" System
Jim Crow was a character in a popular song
"In The Heat Of The Night" (1967)
By the 1920s, blacks are leaving the south in large numbers
European New Imperialism (late 19th century)
Made possible by the Industrial Power of Europe, which gave them huge advantages in warfare:
A) more weapons and better weapons (factory-made)
B) greater wealth=>produce goods that have a price advantage in the marketplace
Leads to funding universities which leads to medicine, weapons technology, engineering, etc
Which gives a huge advantage in warfare
As a result, European industrialized countries conquered a huge part of the world in the late 19th century (with Africa and Asia)
The largest empire was the British
The Belgian Congo was administered so brutally that the other European countries stepped in to force changes
How did the Europeans justify this?
1) social Darwinism-the idea that "stronger" societies (ie those that can defeat other societies in war) SHOULD prevail and rule
2) "the White man's burden"-poem written by Kipling
The idea that the victorious societies (ie European) could "advance" the societies they conquered…this was their duty
There were attempts to obliterate "native" cultures, as a result
What is the argument against these last two beliefs?
The victory of the industrialized north in the us civil war over the equally European non-industrialized south shows that, in fact, the only thing was industrialization that lead to victory
Europeans didn't pay attention to the american civil war or even pay attention to it, therefore it was a "moot point"
