i tried rock climbing for the first time yesterday, with Bill at this climbing gym near our apartment.
hooooly shit. i am so sore today. i am pretty sure i CREATED muscle where it did not previously exist in the course of that four hours! after the first climb, my arms hurt in places i was convinced were never supposed to get sore!
it's also very psychologically weird, since, once you get to the top you obviously have to repel back down. there's no where else to go. BUT IT IS SCARY AS SHIT. you are wearing a giant harness around your wait, attached to this big rope that can hold twenty thousand times your weight, but still. you have to physically just jump away from this rock hold five stories off the ground, and it is god damn frightening to that part of your brain that likes to stay alive. and apparently my brain REALLY LIKES TO STAY ALIVE.
jeez. yeah. i had a lot of fun. but, also a bit frustrating, because i have no arm strength.. at all. when only using my arms, i strain to pick up fifty pounds. bleeh. but i can tell with rock climbing that there is going to be a plateau between what i can climb by being smart with my body weight and balance, and where it's going to require me having some muscle. i was watching some cats LEAP at hand holds and pull themselves up with both arms! that's nuts!
ah well. i'll work on it.
