Good weekend, on the whole. The weather was depressing and gray and wet, but we had several very exciting d20 modern sessions (my character got paralyzed. twice. and ended up unconscious. and she's the meat shield.), and I got lots of sleep. We also watched the movie "Black Snake Moan" today. I thought it was pretty good; there were parts that were too simplistic or confusing, but the music and atmosphere were great. There was something unsettlingly misogenistic about it, though. In some parts I thought violence against women was condemned, but I couldn't help feeling that there was a little bit of an attitude of "the only way you can teach women anything is through violence". At the same time, I couldn't always tell whether this attitude was being condemned or reinforced, so that was unsettling.
I've been thinking lately about being a women/gender studies minor. I was originally going to be a German minor, but unfortunately I can't take any of the German classes that I need this semester, and I'm just not sure I'm that into German. I am really fascinated by my Women/Gender in Medieval Europe class, and I think that history and women/gender studies would be a great fusion of the areas that I'm really interested, especially since i'm interested primarily in social history, and the study of women and gender in history is social history. I don't really know what i need to take for a women/gender minor though.
Do you ever feel like there's so much music out there that you want to listen to more, but there's just so much of it that you lack the proper financial resources and time to obtain it all? God, I really feel like that right now. My interest in blues, particularly Delta blues, has renewed lately, especially after seeing Black Snake Moan (Samuel Jackson's singing voice isn't half bad). So I really need to get my hands on some Blind Lemon Jefferson, Muddy Waters, and Son House, Sonny Boy Williamson, and numerous others. If I were in Corvallis, i would head down to my local excellently-equipped public library, and choose from a wide variety of Blues artists and albums. But I'm not, I'm in Salem, and their library is...sub-par. Plus I don't actually have that much time during daylight hours to go there, and I am definitely not walking there at night.
I've also rediscovered Gorillaz recently, but I don't have very much of their stuff. I also really like Joe Purdy, and i have one of his albums, but he's kind of obscure; all his albums are independent, I highly doubt the library has any of them, and I haven't really met anyone else, either here or at home, who is a fan too. Oh, and Dan Reeder has a new album out! I got it for my dad for Christmas, but I don't have it here. Damn. He does a cover of "a whiter shade of pale" that I think is better than the original.
Also, I got an itunes gift card for Christmas, and then left it at home. I have no idea when I'll be going home next, and there's all this music I want to buy...and it's driving me insane. I don't remember where I left it, so I can't have my mom mail it to me. *Sigh* Life is really hard. But it's okay, because I'm getting my Black Keys fix right now.
I'm not really mentally ready for Monday yet, but it might help if I got academically ready. I still have about forty pages of primary sources on the subject of American Judaism in the mid-1800s to ready, so regrettably, I must sign off. Celia out.
