Western NY Highlander show
woke up early and drove out the day of, got my friend Raf to come along with me and 3 other guys I train with (Brian Worden, John Cottrell, and Joe Snyder), long drive, but we flew along the thurway since theres not much traffic on an early Sunday morning
First Event - Carry and Drag
Carry a Sandback and a Keg down to a sled then drag the sled back, the sandbag was pretty light and so was the keg, but the drag back was still really tough, forget my time, but I think it was 2nd (I know Andrew got first)
Second Event - 56lbs Weight over Bar
after missing 10 at WNY last summer, I wanted to do much better and have been practicing it quite a bit with John and Brian. Nailed opener at 9', 10' also was easy. Managed to just barely squeek 11' over on my 1st attempt, but not even close on 12'. Brian did well getting 12' here and Andrew just narrowly missed 15' on all 3 tries at it. Ended up 3rd since Craig had missed one attempt at 11' before making it - he'd jumped in at 10' so would've beaten me if his first throw at 11' went over
Third Event - Car Pull
I got to go first, but the truck's rear axle was still behind the sidewalk where were doing it, so I pulled it about 5-6' before it basically hit a huge speed bump and wasn't moving. They told me to stop pulling quick and adjusted the starting line allowing me to go again last after everyone else. Quick hands was key here, I think I ended up 3rd? I know Joe was happy he beat me on an event, and once again Andrew managed first (I think this is becoming a trend)
Fourth Event - Open Stone (~15.8lbs)
Rather than play it safe with my first throw, I figured I'd go just go for the glide even though its been years since I've used it regularly. My form is very rusty and got way too much height on the throw, but it ended up being my best one with 34'5". Second throw had too little height though it felt good and was 34'3", third slid off the side of my hand as I was putting it but still went 32 and change, I think 3rd here?
Fifth Event - 15" Log Press for reps (180, clean each)
This was my chance to end Mr Durniat's string on wins, before I went most people were getting very low #s or a few not even a rep, but we'd figured a 15" log sucked to rack and press and had been training viper pressing all the reps. Brian went right before me and banged out 10. I went up and shot up 11 quick, slowed down a bit and hit 2 more for good measure, didn't push for 14 as I was pretty winded and figured it should hold up, it did. 1st place
Sixth Event - Caber toss
We had 2 cabers, if we turned the first one on any of our 3 tries, we could take 2 tries with the second bigger one. I bombed the pick on my 1st attempt, but nailed at on my second and got a 12 o'clock - still took the third attempt cause I need to practice. The 2nd caber I once again bombed the first attempt at the pick, and on my last attempt didn't get a good one, think it was only given 30 degrees? No idea where it placed me, but I think near the bottom
Overall, was a really fun show. The Syracuse guys managed to take 2nd (me), 3rd (Brian), and 4th (Joe) in the middleweight class, and John Cottrell got 2nd in the heavies to Josh Cybart, who showed up and competed despite having done (and won) a NAS show the day before in Pittsburgh. Was also fun to compete against Andrew Durniat again who I last competed against at WNY 2008, and was fun meeting Craig and Scott as well, and thanks to Mike Landrich for putting on a great show for us
