Nearly two decades ago there was a man who loved his wife very much. A wealthy manufacturer of novel steam engine technology, he thought to bestow his wife, with respect to her penchant for figurines, a doll. But not just any doll - he resolved it would possess his wife’s tender eyes and her heartening smile. It would have lovely, supple fingers unfit for labor, and fair skin, vulnerable to the sun’s rays. Furthermore, it would be obedient and meek, so as not to trouble his wife and patient and loyal, so as not to embarrass their family.

As such, their second child, Tanaka Megumi was born.

She matured to their specifications, embodying the ideals of a gentlewoman. Ever presentable, she could converse with eloquence and recite poetry with charm. If her topics were repetitive, it was impolite to mention. Business and science baffled her; frequently indecisive, the concept of military strategy brought her to tears. As a homemaker, she was ineffective, but surely none of that mattered. She would simply never be without servants.

At the age of 18, she married a man of the academe, a former army tactician. Unlike her friends who faced loveless marriages, she blossomed through their union, for he was her parents’ choice. She bore him identical twin boys before the first year’s anniversary, though the genetics for the occurrence were not directly expressed in either of their bloodlines. She was as fiercely dedicated to her new family as she had been to her parents. To this day, she makes sure to visit her sons at least once a week, before letting their maids manage their upbringing.

They were the picture of aristocratic contentment, until her husband’s death two years prior.

It is only a matter of time, the grapevine whispers, before she squanders the family fortune, like an unbound pet will run into traffic. On her first year alone, she erred and enrolled her sons in a public school - one where commoners attended, can you believe? It is a wonder she is able to manage her art gallery. Then again, as a gift from her husband, she must give it attention.

Yet for all the rumor mill’s churning, no tale has sprouted regarding Megumi’s regular visits to Corpus Delicti.
