Yesterday we saw Xanadu, the Musical. Caveat: it is still in previews. It was the hammiest and silliest I have ever seen on broadway. The plot bears little resemblance to the movie (they beefed up the Greek angle, took away Sonny's story) though it is still about opening a roller disco. Kerry Butler and Tony Roberts were awesome.
It was a lot of fun. Light, fluffy, campy, cheesy, hammy fun.
Things it did not have: an electric orchestra pit to re-create the ELO sound. In fact, it did not have an orchestra pit. It had three musicians off to the left who were still managing to emulate the ELO sound.
It had no intermission and ran less than 2 hours.
I'd see it again. Maybe next time we'll sit on the stage.
Next weekend: Spring Awakening.
